Northampton to Hartford commute?
Do many people commute from the NoHo area to Hartford on a daily basis? How is it? I always imagine living in or around Northampton (or Amherst) but figure the closest "decent" paying office jobs would be in Hartford. Does anyone take 91 to Hartford every day for work? And does anyone also know about the Hartford employment situation? Thanks!

I wouldn't say it's common but it's far from impossible. There are some decent employment opportunities in the Springfield and Northampton area but like every place they are suffering right now. Remember, Springfield is actually a larger city than Hartford. There may be a few more jobs in Hartford thanks to it being the capital and government employment is supposedly growing. The insurance industry has a strong presence in the area as well.
What's your industry?

Springfield has many opportunities for employment in the legal field. Bacon and Wilson is one firm I've seen hiring recently. The insurance companies in Hartford would also have large legal depts.

Hartford has more jobs than any other city in Connecticut.
Also, there are express buses from Enfield that can take some of the stress out of your commute.

Springfield might be a larger city, but the Hartford metro area is considerably larger than the Springfield metro. A lot of people do consider them to be one big metro area though with the 2 cities being only about 22 miles apart.

Springfield only has a higher population because it has more than double the land-area of Hartford. As you mentioned, Hartfords metro area is larger and the city really does look and feel larger. I prefer Springfield but do consider them to be part of the same metro area given the proximity. They do share a major airport.

Hartford and Springfield are considered 'twin cities' in the south central Connecticut river valley learning 'corridor'
Springfield has less traffic then Hartford- a commute between Hartford and Northampton is doable- but at times can be difficult (weather, accidents, construction).

In my casual job searching for information technology jobs, it also seems that there's definitely pockets of opportunities in Enfield, Windsor, and other places that aren't as far down in to the Hartford commute mess.
