I think some people (whom I worked with, were super people) BUT, for the most part, snitty, snobby jerks with sticks up their arses.. I lived in a well-to-do neighborhood in Plymouth. I have never seen soo many people in my neighborhood NEVER talk to one another! OMG!! I said hello to my neighbors one day, then never spoke to them after that! You think some people would welcome you to the neighborhood?? Everyone was snooty there! I couldn't wait to leave. Rude drivers, rude people, rude everything! I did like Trader Joe's though!

OK, well I have lived in MA my whole life up until this past Sept. and I don't know where you guys get this stuff. We may not go out of our way to talk with strangers but we aren't rude, or at least not all of us. I lived in Western MA, you should try visiting that part its different from the Eastern side. People in Boston and surrounding areas may come off more rude but thats cause they are more busy then in Western area and can't just stop what they are doing to have a conversation with a stranger. If that makes us rude then so be it.
As far as driving, I beg to differ, I have more problems driving in TN then back up in MA. The highway I drive on down here is a 3-4 lane highway and when there is an accident your screwed cause traffic is backed up for miles! I have never once seen a highway in MA (western part anyways) closed because of an accident, except after I moved down here and they had every right to at this time. I believe it is all a matter of what you are used to. Being used to MA drivers, driving down here can be a nightmare. People can be over cautious. The speed limit down here is 70 and there are quite a few that only go about 60 or so. IMO that is worse then us MA drivers. That causes just as much accidents. People are always on the phone. Me n my fiance joke around when we drive and see how many people that are driving while on the phone. And to be honest its probably for every 5 people on the road at least 3-4 are on phone.
So what is it that is so bad about MA drivers, cause I hear this often but no one can explain to me why...

Boston, LA, Detroit, Chicago, NJ, NYC...basically have a rude mentality in their own trademark way.
I'm originally from Boston and yes, by outside standards I can be rude.
I don't rationalize or justify bad behavior, it's just how things are.
I have a theory, largely populated area's tend to arouse friction...simple.
When you're in traffic, in line at the grocery store, or waiting on hold for the utility co it creates a mentality that becomes somewhat acceptible on a large scale social level, think NYC.
We're not so much interested in stopping to have a chat about the weather as we are about just getting home from work as quick as possible to get to little league, spend time with the family, or just relax for the first time all day.
I've been to many parts of the country, every area has it's own variety of rudeness.
In the south, someone might intentionally take their time in front of you in line, or seem to pretend not to hear you.
Someone from Ma would consider that more rude than cutting you off, or raising their voice at you.
Urban area's tend to prioritize time where so much of it can be lost in the proverbial traffic jam of the lifestyle.
It's all about culture IMHO.

I had to reply, western Ma is nothing like the east...I'd move there in a flash if I thought I could get work consistantly.
It's beautiful, rustic, quiet and you guys pronounce your "R's".
I've been stuck on 128 over a single car accident for half a day (flipped over 2 lanes).
Once, my former boss just let us turn around and go home because it defeated the purpose to go in so late.
Rude drivers...ugh ...try 93 south going into the city early a.m.'s.
You see the 19 yr old kid in your rear view slowly cutting in and out of lanes, nearly sideswiping people just to get ahead by what amounts to maybe 30 seconds in traffic, fully knowing he's headed your way.
They finally changed driving laws for young drivers here to to cut down on the accidents & insurance costs a few months back.

I can definitely agree with this. Its funny how people categorize all of MA with Boston cause thats not the case, and yet you hear all the time how rude MA is but noone ever complains about the other big cities such as LA, Detroit, Chicago, NJ and NYC when they are all can be rude too. Its just the big city life style.

I have to tell you... I live in Jersey now and people are tailing you up your arse every day!! If you are going 80, you aren't going fast enough in NJ!! it is crazy.. If you don't go within milliseconds after the light turns green, you are screwed! you get the honk, honk!!!!!!!!!!! It is nuts!
I think all states suck with drivers!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but MA and NJ really suck. I must tell you though, at least in MA they let you out of a street without waiting for 10 minutes to get into the flow of traffic!!

Just make a list of all the 50 states and U.S. possessions, all the Canadian provinces and territories, all of Central and South America, all of Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa, Australia, Iceland, Greenland and everywhere else on earth ---- and make a note to self: there are rude people EVERYWHERE.
I just don't know why it's necessary to start a thread about this
And multiple times, no less.
It's just insulting to the folks who live in whichever state or place you're posting about, and patently false. There are also nice people in every place. Why not start a thread about that? I actually haven't seen much of that...

I agree, it is just as rude putting posts about the "rude" people in the areas as it is the people you are complaining about. So technically you are no better.

In places like Mass (especially Boston), there are just so many people crammed into such a small area there's no time for chit-chat. So technically, a person who is endlessly talking would be the rude person...
My advice: Try a place with lower density.

When I first moved here I thought people were mean for sport (like the banana republic clerk at Burlington Mall who shoved me so she could hang the clothes from the dressing room) Today I took myself to lunch in Fitchburg and realized that its not all of MA thats mean and nasty...just the people chasing the mortgage or the "ungettable get".
I simply dont fit here. Bottom line. And its not as if I feel I don't measure up...I'm accomplished in my own right and have friends that we've met all over the world. I embrace diversity and hail educational opportunities. But inside the 95 corridor? I just want to leave. Life is way to short to be cold--literally and figuratively.
We could break it down to a science regarding the sun...I'll bet my recycling refund that people who are more exposed to sunlight are happier--I even bought a verilux happy light when we first moved here.
What I dont get at all are people on this thread and others who just simply refuse to even entertain the notion that an "ism" of eastern MA is lack of concern for others.
I think that's it--the golden rule must have gone into the water with the tea.
