My husband and I recently retired and want to relocate from rural upstate NY to the Boston area to be closer to our grandchildren and to the cultural opportunities of the city. We have looked North of Boston (Andover, Haverhill, NA) and West near Worcester (Holden, Auburn, Spencer, Sterling, Berlin, Clinton). We are looking for a small town or village similar to Newburyport or Concord, but with less traffic and sprawl. Also want to be on a rail line so we can take the train into the city. Our price range is flexible- between $400,000-$750,000 and we'd like room for a small vegetable garden (Sunny 1/2 acre would be great). Can anyone give us an idea of places to look. We have found lots of nice homes with yards, but none near a nice town center. Thanks in advance for your help.

Cape Ann & environs: Manchester-By-The-Sea, Essex, Hamilton, Wenham, Ipswich, and Rockport come to mind. Ruralish towns, yet close to Boston and have access to the T (Essex, youd have to drive to Manchester). Very beautiful area.
