Info on Marlborough
I'm considering a job at Assabet Valley High in Marlborough. Any info on the town (or surrounding area) and school would be appreciated.

Marlboro is a small city - There are some pretty neighborhoods but it's a little gritty downtown and schools there aren't considered good. They almost lost their accredidation a few years ago. I recall Assabet being more lenient than more traditional high schools though that may have changed somewhat. There are lots of nice areas to live in nearby communities though. Northboro, Westboro, etc. Please feel free to touch base if you have other questions.

I attended the LPN program at Assabet a few years ago, and had a great experience with the school. Granted the program was pretty separate from the rest of the school, but we never had any issues with the students, administration, etc. I'm not sure what type of position you would be taking, but Assabet is a vocational high school, so you have more classes in subjects such as woodworking, mechanics, aesthetics, etc. Some parts of Marlboro can be a little sketchy, but for the most part it's a nice area. There are some nice towns very close by, such as Southboro, Northboro, Westboro, and Hudson. Good luck.

Thanks. I've also applied to Hudson. I'm an English teacher.

I grew up in Marlboro, MA and lived there until I graduated from high school. My family has lived in the city since the mid 1800s and although I no longer live there, my mother and my son still live in Marlboro. Until the 1960s Marlboro was just a small town (even though it was incorporated as a city) of approximately 20,000 people. In fact, in keeping with its small town nature, a sign in Marlboro calls it a country kind of city. Beginning in the 1960s with the opening of companies such as Raytheon, Marlboro grew from a city that had consisted of the town and rural areas including apple orchards on the outskirts of town to include suburban developments, which it didn't have until then. Currently, Marlboro has the older parts of town--including downtown-- and the suburban area which consist mainly of housing tracts. In addition to Assabet Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School, Marlboro has a comprehensive high school, Marlboro High.
Despite what people in previous posts may have said about Marlboro having some not so great areas, Marlboro is not a town that has any serious problems. It is a small New England community. Although Marlboro public schools aren't considered to best in the area ( the schools inSudbury, Wayland, Weston, all towns east of Marlboro all have better reputations) they schools are not bad, just average.
I can answer any other questions you have. Just ask.

It is very gratifying to get the kind of insight you provided. All the more reason I want to move to New England. I have read so many negative comments about the area. But my experience has been positive. I think once I get there I'm going to love it. Marlborough sounds like the kind of place I am looking for. I like the small towns and as for the schools, I'm a very good teacher and maybe I can make a difference. Keep your fingers crossed for me and thanks for your information.

I hope you get the teaching job in Marlboro. Public schools across the US need good committed teachers who can make a difference. Both my spouse and I are teachers. I began teaching in public elementary schools, but now teach at the university. I'm partial to high school English teachers as my spouse was a high school Engish teacher for many years. My spouse still teaches English, but currently at the community college. I currently live in the SF Bay Area, but miss New England. Don't believe the negative things you read about New England and Massachusetts. That area of the country is a great place to live, work and raise a family. Good luck and feel free to send me a PM if you have any other questions or need additional information.

Sorry for the confusion. Assabet VHS is in Marlboro. I caught the error but just let it stand. My oops.
