with decent schools? I have 2 elementary school kids. ITs early but I have an interview and need to have my approximate costs known if it goes anywhere.

I dont need uber. I also dont need a school rated 1 or 2 on greatschools. I saw a single school rated a 7 in Springfield proper. We will rent the first few years and need 3 bedrooms so need to rent a house.

We are talking perhaps 75K family income so that seems to leave out the uber schools. $2k a month rent is crazy and economic suicide for us.

I currently live in NJ so am used to driving but wish to limit as much as possible. Certainly under an hourish if possible (on a sunny day. I know rain slows things down). The job is downtown.

Look outside of Springfield !!!!!. Longmeadow probably has the best schools, but there is limited rental housing. It is also a little snooty. Similar with Wilbraham. Take a look at Northampton - good schools, great area for a family, a good number of rentals - about 20-25 minute drive to Springfield. Northampton is probably the most desirable place to live in Western Mass.

You will find Easthampton a little more affordable and I think the schools are decent, and you will still be near Northampton. Easthampton is also planning to renovate their high school, so that may be available for your kids.

i would suggest Ludlow or East Longmeadow. Good schools in both, Ludlow probably has more rentals.

If you are wanting to be close to Springfield but affordability I would highly recommend Westfield. Rentals in Northampton aren't too affordable. I would imagine the same for Longmeadow. Westfield area is great!

Springfield elementary schools are OK, some better than others. Once you go up into middle and high school, that's where people have problems, much like other "city" school systems.

What many folks do is buy in Springfield, save a good amount on housing, have lower assessments and therefore lower tax bills, and use the savings on private schools. Many will live in East Forest Park or Forest Park and send their kids to Holy Cross, or live in Atwater Park and send their kids to St. Stans in chicopee. Here's a site on Springfield neighborhoods:
