This video has gone viral in the two towns mentioned. I found it a funny, tongue in cheek view of stereotypes but Rockland residents from students to School Committee members are up in arms.

What's in a (town) name? at Boston.com

Ha Ha, thanks for posting that. The Ledger always has good videos.
I didn't catch all of the audio (the accents), but did Hanover escape being trashed?

What are the upset about in Rockland, the "youths" that were interviewed?

You know what, Hanover came out unscathed. I didn't even realize that until you mentioned it.

One of my favorite parts was the woman in The Snug. Norwell is full of pot smoking people who live in the woods???? LOL

Yes Rockland residents felt they were unfairly portrayed and that the interviewer (who is a Rockland High school grad) chose the kids who hang around behind Tedeschi's rather than kids who they feel are a more accurate portrayal of the town's population.

From the other interviews, it seems the Ledger found kids that accurately portrayed Rockland's stereotype.

VIDEO: On South Shore, a hometown tells more than just where you live - Quincy, MA - The Patriot Ledger

The original article has a couple of other funny quotes.

I just realized they left out Braintree.

Funny.....the difference between Hingham and the other towns is the people can afford better lawyers to keep their bad behavior quiet. My DH worked in the Hingham PO for 34 years...he has stories.

Marshfield got off scott free. Just a mention of an accent at as far as I heard.
Actually It's probably better for the people of marshfield if we are forgotten about and we stay below the radar. It's still a nice semi-blue collar town with some great beaches. Why get involved in the the B.S. of status. Of course we still have "rivalry" with Duxbury but that mostly sport oriented now. As opposed to when I came to the town in the 1980's. Then is was a lot more about class warfare (at least as it was perceived at the time).
To be honest I think most people from a Marshvegas perspective didn't/don't really have Hingham on their radar. I really don't remember anything really bad or good mentioned about the town until the big real estate boom. Rockland was on the radar for us and I think we took the perspective of Rockland is OK but it too close to Brockton ( which was considered a hell hole.) Most the the kids I met out Rockland we good folk with a good work ethic. I really don't have anything bad to say about them.
And Yes as mentioned in passing in the video there are a lot of people in the town of Marshfield with an accent. I think why this is so is because back in the day a lot of folks from Dot, southie, and some other Boston areas came to marshfield to escape forced busing and they brought there accent with them. Basically the Boston accent somewhat stuck to the town. This may change as we seem to be receiving more white collar folks here.

MARSHFIELD -
Marsh Vegas

How the town got its rep: Locals have bestowed the name for all the seaside town has to offer fun-seekers - just like the real Vegas?

High school mascot: Ram

2009 median home price: $330,000

Median household income: $83,336

College grads: 39%

The reputation part of this synopsis of the town is not right. Basically the name Marshvegas was originally a slight by locals because there wasn't really anything else to do in the town beside hangout at the beach. BTW, I would prefer if we didn't have any rep and coasted peacefully along unnoticed. Of course yours truly is posting on a world wide website that can be seen from Marshfield to China (if they aren't censoring this site that is.) So I guess I'm not helping in that endeavor.
