There's an old book sale at the Newburyport Public Library this Saturday. Outdoor festivals, etc. don't really start happening in NBPT till a bit later in the spring, soon the docks will be in place, boats will getting put into the water, etc. I would suggest strolling along the boardwalk and downtown (it's going to be a BEAUTIFUL weekend!) Lunch... there are SO MANY GREAT PLACES. What type of food are you looking for? Can't go wrong with Michael's Harborside, Starboard Galley or The Grog (they've been part of the Newburyport landscape for years. Little more upscale and creative cuisine, The Black Cow, Not your Avg. Joes or maybe Glen's Galley. Mr. India has great Indian food, Agave for Mexican. Or you can cross the bridge to Plum Island and check out The Plum Island Grille.. please report back and let us knwo where you went and your thoughts!

The Thirsty Whale on State St is a fun place for your typical bar grub. I like The Grog too. Starboard Galley not so much, but there's a good crowd there. "Not Your Average Joe's" is not only not even average IMHO, they're all over New England so why drop your lunch bucks there? Same for the Upper Crust pizza parlor, but they do make good pies. There's a Chinese restaurant down one of the side streets; I tried it out and now I steer would-be customers away. (lol) It's take-out caliber and not very good.
You can take in most of the Newburyport dining landscape just by strolling up and down State St and peering down the block at every intersection. Downtown's compact like that.
Definitely stop by the Custom House Museum while you're there. Even if there's no special exhibit in place it's still interesting. More people need to know what an important place Newburyport has in US history. It was only a few years ago that I learned the Coast Guard was founded there.
Go early, stay late, and enjoy!
