thanks for the insight...I welcome any advice you can offer, even if its not what I want to hear...
I suppose some of my reluctance comes from that my husband has just completed three very long tours in Iraq, and while he can certainly handle his own Id like for him to enjoy this much deserved break. I think we will be fine, but one question: I get that New Englanders are reserved, quiet, slow to warm up to new people....but are they happy?

Happiness abounds when you make it happen
Wow- that's a tough question - is any one of us happy all the time? I doubt it. But, you make your own life and structure it so that you surround yourself with people who bring you joy. I'm sure you will find some grumpy people, but for the most part, everyone i know has a pretty fulfilling life. that's what it takes - being part of a community and keeping yourself occupied with lots of activities. If you help others, you will always feel good about yourself.
New England has so many things to see and do. You can take a drive each weekend and see something new and wonderful. The fall is the best time - going to vermont and enjoying the crisp weather. Newly picked apples, carving pumpkins, buying new fall clothes (heehee, shopping always makes me happy) - that's happiness!

But, Whole Foods is great and the quality is super with a great variety - also Trader Joes is so friendly (One in Arlington and one in Burlington, very close to bedford) and the prices are excellent. We go there and to the local shops to do most of our shopping these days. In Bedford, there is a little chicken farm that is fantastic - fresh eggs and veggies and flowers. And in Lexington, Wilson farm is the best.
There used to be "welcome wagon" ladies who came to your house when you moved to town, but I think they went out of business. But your new neighbors will clue you in to the great places to shop and eat out.
Here's a local hint; Bedford House of Roast Beef makes the best roast beef sandwich around!

I know! I forgot all about that place. What a gold mine!! Also, Market Basket, although old with narrow isles, is the most friendly in Burlington just outside of Lexington.

I have to say that I love the Bedford area of Massachusetts. I lived in Arlington for awhile, and worked in Bedford as well. It's a great community! The area is full of history and culture. You are a short trip to the beaches, Boston, central Massachusetts and much much more! I am born and raised in Massachusetts and love the state very much but work and life made me move south. Go to MA with an open non-judgemental view and you will love teh state! Good luck! GO SOX!!!

If hubby has completed three rough tours in Iraq; You should
once you become settled, spend a week on the Maine coastat a nice Inn, or perhaps on Cape Cod-
This will surely help both of you unwind and enjoy New England. Then spend a weekend in Boston and try and see a red sox game (getting tickets may prove daunting).
Just relax. A dinner for two at Legal Seafoods is another way to unwind.

Bedford is a GREAT town. I live in Lexington (nextdoor to Bedford) and I love it. I spend a lot of time in Bedford. The staff at Stop and Shop are often rude but there are plenty of other places. We moved to the area a year ago and honestly, it is the best place I have lived! I love it here!

By the way, anybody know where I can find an Air Force base or any other military base in the Boston area that has a commissary that I could visit to buy food?

If you have not come here already don't bother. The only reason I'm still here is because I'm married and my spouse is not willing to move anywhere I want to live for various reasons. I warn you, if you are a friendly outgoing person, you will be conditioned by the environment here to hate withing a few years and if you don't escape after that, that antisocial element will be what you are and the scary thing is, you don't even know it's happening until you leave this area and realize what a jerk people think you are when they say hello to you on the street and how you react. And the "you're in a big city" excuse you will hear often is a crock because Boston is not a big city, Bedford is not even boston, and having lived in San Francisco, I met many friendly people there.
