Default Looking for a doctor

Hi all, I am looking for some advice on finding a doctors practice. I have not lived in MA very long, I am located in West Springfield. After going without health insurance for almost 8 years, I FINALLY am able to go to the doctors now! Unfortunatley I don't know very many people here so I took the advice of my boyfriends family and signed up at their family practice in Ludlow....which his mother raved about.

I have some semi serious health issues I need to have addressed, and after waiting almost 2 months to see the doctor as a new patient, I finally got in there. I was a little nervous, but happy to finally have the chance to talk to someone. The first thing the nurse practitioner said to me was "What can I do for you?" so I replied "I have a few things I need to discuss" she replies to me in an irritated voice " Well, you have 15 minutes". The whole time I was in there she made it seem like I was putting her out of her way, and she kept looking at the clock. I have been there 4 times since then, and have never seen the same person twice, and it seems like they rush you in and out and overbook their patients.

So, what I am looking for is a practice that will take the time to listen to me, and not make me feel like I am holding them back from their lunch break. So if I need to take 30 minutes to discuss something, or if I am in and out in 5, I want to know my doctor actually cares (which I know is rare these days!). I am willing to drive outside of my area if someone has a doctor they think might be a good fit for me.

Any advice or feedback is very much appreciated.

that doctor's office you visited should have booked you at LEAST 30 minutes, as any 1st time visit or new patient visit merits at least 30 minutes. my husband is a doctor (not in MA) and I even know this is common practice. next time you make an appointment with your new doctor's office, make sure the receptionist books you in as a new patient and DO tell her/him that you have several concerns you want to talk about with the doctor. that is important because it IS true that they may not have time to discuss everything UNLESS you tell them. communication on the part of the patient is just as important to your total satisfaction as is the communication from the doctor. good luck.

They made it clear to me that the wait to be seen (the 2 months) was due to me being a new patient, which is why I was so disappointed when I got there

It kind of felt like going to a fast food restaurant instead of a sit-down restaurant in comparison lol. And I really don't think anyone should have to be treated that way when it comes to something as important as your health.

Lorimac1975...if you can give me the # to your doctor you listed that would be great. If you don't want to type it here, you can PM me. I did a search and it looked like it was in Methuen MA, if that is the right one.

Thank you both so much for your replies. If anyone else sees a doctor they really love in my area, please post!!

I would really love to hear from some more people living in the Western MA area about doctors. I don't want to have to choose blindly

Smile Finding A Good Doctor

Good morning Sinovia,

I live in southern NH. I had hip issues and the Doctor in this state that I went to, suggested I probably should think about having hip replacement. So where I'm originally from Massachusetts, I figured I'd get a 2nd opinion. I ended up fortunately being able to switch health care providers on top of that. It took several months, but I lucked out with the coverage I have. I ended up getting Blue Cross of Massachusetts. You can go in to their website, it's for every one actually even before you register with them and on it they have some wonderful tools for investigative work on finding all these Doctors all through out New England. I ended up really liking my Primary Care Physician a lot that I found through their website! His office is SO SO convenient too for me to get to. I just have to go down to Peabody, MA and for me, it's a breeze down I-95. To cut the story short, I DON'T actually need to have hip replacement surgery and it's such a relief with these wonderful Doctor's we're fortunate to have from these great hospitals in New England. So do your homework, go to this website I suggested here and cruise through it to see what I mean about it. You'll see quite a few from the Springfield area, you might be better off finding a good one in your neck of the woods for convience sake any way.

SO Sinovia when I saw your post, I thought that you could use another suggestion. If you want you can go in to the website: TITLE PAGE

On it, you can find SO many Doctors right in the Springfield area where you live. I think it would be MUCH more convenient for you to have your health care be at least 20 to 25 miles from your home, don't you? Like Peabody, MA. for me is actually only a 1/2 hour door to door drive for me. I like the fact that mine is affiliated with Boston hospitals too.

There's a wonderful list of Doctors on this site mentioned that are "Recipients of the 2005 Excellence in Primary Care" AND I was happy to see that my Doctor was on it AND Sinovia there's quite a few on this list from your neck of the woods out in Springfield.

Is Northampton, MA near Springfield, by any chance? Because if it is? There's SO many fantastic Doctors that you could go to that are quite good from that list right in that whole area. I saw one on the list from the Mercy Medical Center in Springfield?? Have you heard of that facility before? Well, I even heard about it in New Hampshire on how good it is there! If you PM me, I'll give you the name of the Doctor that's there from that list of recipients of the 2005 Excellence in Primary Care.

You can actually go in to the website yourself too of course. It's truly a wonderful tool to have and to get all the various Doctor's names and where they practice and all that good stuff about them. Also if you needed their business telephone numbers, you can go online now too for that, it's so easy. TELEPHONE DIRECTORY just type in their various names and their business addressess and telephone #'s will come up for you.

Like I said, just PM me if you want some of the Doctor's names from that list if you can't find it on the website.

Good luck!

CityGirl52, thank you so much for your lengthly reply! I am going to PM you for sure for some more info.

Northampton is very close to me, infact we will be moving to the Amherst/Hadley area the end of this year which is the next town over from Northampton. I have heard from several people that some of the best doctors in the world are in MA, and I have also heard of Mercy Medical Center.

I am glad to hear you didn't have to have the hip surgery, it is amazing what a 2nd, or even 3rd opinion can do for you.
