summering in Nahant?
We are considering purchasing a small cottage in Nahant for weekend getaways. Looks like a sweet little town, but some have said it has a history of mafia connections and that there are parts that flood during hurricanes. Any truth to these statements?

The "Causeway" (the street that goes from Lynn to Nahant) sometimes floods during major storms. Mostly drive-able after a few days. As for "mafia" , ma by, it has been rumored for years.

The only people who go to Nahant are the people who live there. No problem with crime or big city stuff. I lived on the N. Shore for 10 years and have friends who live in Nahant now.

I am a lifelong Nahanter...it is a great little town. Unlike some other seaside communities it is pretty down to earth with lots of regular people...of course we have our share of rich people too, but us "Townies" are teachers, police, nurses, fire fighters, etc.
There are areas, close to the water, that do flood during big storms. If you get a sump pump in the basement you should be fine, it is not like in other towns where houses are washed out to sea when there is a storm.
As far as mafia connections, a former Nahant resident is in prison for his involvement with the mafia. His family still lives here but even before he was in prison, that involvement never affected the community. So don't worry about crime as it is virtually non-existent here...helped by access being limited to one road in and one road out, so it is hard for criminals to escape!
A major benefit of buying here are the beaches....you can't come to our beaches unless you are a Nahant resident or know a Nahant resident, and the beaches are great! You can't even compare them to the one that most people call "Nahant beach" which is at the edge of town and has public parking. So I would suggest buying, it's a great place!

living in Nahant; commuting to boston
My fiance and I are considering moving to Nahant. I am tired of living in the city, and want to live by the beach! My one concern is that we do not own a car, and given our upcoming wedding, we can only afford to buy one.
We have different schedules right now, and although we can drive together in the morning, I will need to find a way to get home...
I saw that there is a bus route from the Lynn commuter rail to Nahant - does anyone know if this bus service is reliable? Does it run on schedule?

Nahant is great. close to revere beach and lynn shore as well, as the north shore (easy access via 1A--129) up to salem-marblehead. The Blue Line may be extended up to Lynn eventually but right now you have to drive to wonderland or revere beach. Convenient to the airport and boston....via route 1 - 1A...and very scenic commute if you do have to drive into town might as well be a beautiful ocean view right?
Get a FAST LANE Transponder for your car so you can cross the Tobin Bridge and such and/or go through the Sumner tunnel into Boston.....from the airport.
there's a nice movie theater- Showcase Cinemas nearby in Revere, and shopping in Revere, Lynn.
lots of shops restaurants up and down route 1.
Nahant is a great place to bike or jog around and has a nice beach as well with a 2 mile long bike path.
There is a nice restaurant there called Tides too at the end of the causeway just before little nahant.
good sunsets you can see over the water here too, and the cliffs on the north side of nahant are interesting.

You could be dropped off at the Lynn Commuter rail station or the Wonderland T Stop (blue Line to Boston)
not far away. there's also a bus i believe that runs to Nahant tho how frequently i dont know you'd have to consult the MBTA website

Free Transponder!
Paying tolls using Fast Lane/E-ZPass is much more convenient than stopping to pay cash at the toll plaza, but if you open an account with the Mass Pike Fast Lane Program they'll charge you $30.55 up-front for the transponder (and that doesn't include $20.00 to create an initial balance in your account).
You can open an E-ZPass account with any state or toll authority that is part of the E-ZPass network, it doesn’t matter where you live. There are agencies out there that don't charge for the transponder, and don't have a monthly service fee. Some good choices are for free transponders and no fees are: the Maryland DOT (broken link), the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, and the Peace Bridge Authority of New York and Ontario.
