Trying to help a friend with relocating. Any nice communities within 30 min driving distance from Boston/Everett area? Good schools a must, budget of around $500,000 for family of 5, prefers waterfront towns but not a must. I only really know the extreme S. Shore and Cape so any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

Well, maybe just work one's way up the North Shore, going north of Revere. $500K should get something waterfront. The "30-minute" part has a lot more to do with traffic and driving than it does actual distance. What part of Everett or Boston? Likely public transport would make a lot more sense, the train along the North Shore.

Default Try Easton

You might want to look into Easton. It is south of Boston about 30 minutes. It has very good schools and is quick to the Cape as well as the city. Voted one of best 100 small towns! For more info you can also check out The Original Easton Mass Community Website.

Waterfront makes $500K a little harder....if you are driving, any of the towns on the North Shore like Swampscott would be within 30 minutes of Everett, but you definitely couldn't drive to the city in 30 minutes. The towns of Melrose, Wakefield and Reading are nice, and they are 15-30 minute commutes to the city via Commuter Rail. You could buy a really nice house for $500K in any of those communities.

I think mecawa means a town on the water, not a house on the water.

Have your friend look at Swampscott or Marblehead.

Swampscott is on the commuter rail as well, and it's not a long ride to North Station. Marblehead may even have homes in the price range, but that's a bit tougher of a commute. Driving to Everett via Lynn Shore Drive and Revere Beach Pkwy may not be too bad. I haven't really done it in the rush hour.
