Default As for any victim of robbery...

He and a couple of others had been Robbing hotels and apts on the westside on Maui for months, he is in jail now , he got 20yrs . he was SOOOO stupid that he ask my neighbor , an old classmate of his for a cig and told him that he had to get in my apt, later my neighbor was able to tell the police who he was. I was lucky he did not hurt me. It usetobe that we did not have to lock our doors , but now that has changed. The other 2 times they got busted too. One of the worst things that happens here I believe is the Animal abuse, I wish something could be done about that . Over the yrs I have found many Nice local people tho. The apt complex that I live in now 1 1/2 yrs the police come nightly, moving very soon.
Have you ever wondered why some people get robbed all the time while some people never get robbed? It's because the people who don't get robbed have a certain level of confidence--that is to say that they, either consciously or subconsciously, are aware of their surroundings. They look people (translation: potentially robbery suspects) in their eyes, and they look like they'd cause problems to would-be robbers.

Bad guys always look for easy targets, they look for easy pray. To illustrate the extreme, if you are a shy woman walking quickly with your head down clinching your purse you will be targeted. Conversely, doing the opposite, or at least projecting the opposite, will reduce your chances of being a victim. WEAKNESS INVITES ATTACK, so don't appear weak.

And another thing: it's ok to be nervous. Nervousness sharpens the senses and makes you more aware of your surroundings. Just try not to act nervous.

Lastly, for a crime to occur, three things have to happen: there must be motive, opportunity, and means. You can not control the motive, but you can eliminate the opportunity. Thus, don't leave your iPad visible in the back seat of your car, for example.

I hope the bad guys aren't reading this...

Best of luck to all. I hope this helps.

I am Filipino and my husband is white. The last time we visited Maui, we had several encounters with the locals expressing their disapproval. We love the islands, but the last trip was really difficult. We did ignore a lot of the rude looks and name calling but I am still in shock of how obvious it was. I understand that some mainlanders can be jerks and obnoxious, but we were very respectful of the land and to other people. I was told that it was because locals thought I was a local and the fact that I was with a white person was a slap to their face. I just don't understand this type of thinking. We were going to move to Maui because of it's beauty and way of living, but after our last visit, I don't think we will be moving or even visit anytime soon.

Huh? Where the heck in Maui are you doing all this "local" mingling and getting all this disapproval. Certainly not Lahaina/Kaanapali or Wailea/Kihei - or Big/Little Beach - or the biking the mountains or catamaran sails.....

Name calling? That just seems so over the top.

I went to the swap meet last Saturday, and witnessed some name calling. I was behind a couple, and some passers-by did say some rude comments. The couple then commented to the vendor that they thought it was because they were white.

Well, as a witness to the whole thing, actually it was because they were being inconsiderate. They were stopping suddenly, making people behind them stop too. They took a quick right turn step into a vendor stall, nearly stomping on two small children that were walking behind them. They didn't say excuse me or sorry, they just acted like they were the only people around.

The people who did the name calling had to snatch their children back from harm, and walk around this oblivious couple. Clearly they got mad and snapped off the rude comments as they passed by. Then the couple decided the reason for the comments was their race. Interesting conclusion, which maybe speaks more to their state of mind about such things.

So sometimes it isn't what we assume to be the cause of a problem. It could be something entirely different.
