Before I ask my question let me give some background. I lived in Holnolulu almost 15 years ago and have not returned to Hawaii since. I have always regreted my decision to leave the Islands and now have a good oppertunity to move back. I will be employed by the federal government and working on Lanai. I have have read all of the Lanai threads I can find but would like some current info if anyone can help out. What is the current economy like and are times tough for kamaaina? I also have an 8 year old daughter and my main concern is transplanting her there knowing the reputation the public school system has. What is the school on Lanai like? Is commuting from Maui a realistic option or is that just too much of a hassle?

Thes are my main concerns and any info is helpful.

Lanai of 15 years ago is still lanai of today with exchanging the pineapple fields and farm work for the two resorts and service work. The town is till the same, the activity is still the same, the nothing is still the same. Lanai is even boondock stick living to Hawaiians. Its always a good idea to get a first hand look at a new area and that's what is always recommended for moving to Hawaii, but it holds much more to a place like Lanai or Molokai.

Commuting back and forth is possible, but you really have to have the will to do that. Its only a short 20 or so miles from Maui to lanai but imagine the airport hassles everyday or the ferry each and every day. Most stay on Lanai for the work week and go back tot he other islands on the days off.

The kamaiana is doing all they can, because the food shipment might not be as often, I grew up there, and pretty much it's all the same.

The school is small and all in one, meaning elementary and highschool together. I think you and your daughter will like it there. There are about 2 thousand people or less.
