On 10-28-2011 this sailboat ran aground near Sprecklesville. A guy was fishing at 9:30pm and saw it come out of the darkness. Imagine being that guy. It has been adrift since 10-06-2011 when it was disabled off Hilo. No idea why they didn't retrieve it once they were rescued. They're coming to salvage it now apparently.

I only got a few pics before all these people started climbing on it.

Yeah, thanks for the photos and info. I read about that rescue, and I wondered if anyone (owners, insurers) would go looking for the empty boat. Never thought it would hit land, but I guess the tradewinds brought it right into the islands.

Quantum leap indeed, how else did it get through that reef.

When it was abandoned in international waters, the laws read that salvage (ownership) can be transferred to the finder. However, since no one found it in international waters, does it not still belong to the original owner and are those people on board essentially guilty of trespassing and possible theft of any missing items?

Yep. DLNR posted a big yellow sign the next day saying NO TRESSPASSING. Glad I got pics without the ugly sign.
