Wasn't WaterWorld filmed off the Big Island? I don't remember any filming for it off of Maui, but maybe they had some filming there, too. In any case, even if it was someeone taking a jet ski to Maui, it wouldn't be a daily commute. That's the Alenuinuihaha channel and it's not traversed by small craft without them checking the wind, weather and waves. Even big ships have trouble with that channel on occasion.

Maybe it was Kevin Costner and he had webbed fingers so he'd be fine.

Yes waterworld was filmed at Kawaihae harbor and down on the set in Waipio (samed place they filmed Raiders of the Lost Ark and Outbreak)

It was Laird Hamilton who used the jet ski between Maui and the BI. He ran out of fuel and was rescued by the USCG. His jet ski ended up washing up on Lanai.

Maybe I am confusing two stories because the dude on the jet ski heading to Maui the day we were there sure didn't look like Laird Hamilton at all. Unless he was about 300 lbs back then! Maybe when we saw that, the guy from the ATV tour told us about when Laird Hamilton used to do that. I am gettin old and it was a long time ago, so who knows! LOL! But we did watch with binoculars a very large guy with dark skin and dark hair heading towards Maui that day on a jet ski.

Laird was the only person who did that Maui-BI run during the filming of Waterworld. It may have been someone else out buzzing around and having fun and someone just thought it was connected with Waterworld or soemthing.

I was thinking that maybe when we saw that, and asked the tour guide what it was, he then told us a story about when Laird did it during the filming and I am just confusing the two. We watched this guy for awhile through binoculars, until we couldn't see him anymore. I also remember seeing some huge turtles down below swimming around. It was a beautiful spot!

LOL I love the Waterworld connection. It's such a cheesy movie but I've seen it like a dozen times cause it's fun. Haha!

Aloha

Anyone still on this thread? I live in Kihei and ride my pwc all the time. You are supposed to go out 3000 feet and then do what you want. However, I sometimes take the kids and dogs on the ski and go no wake speed down the coast towards Makena and stop at beaches along the way cruise on the beach for a bit and head on.

I dont see the issue with riding slow, no wake in any area, any time of year. PWC's are way safer than boats with propellers. The impeller on the ski would never hurt a turtle or swimmer. No wake near the beach poses no threat or noise nuisance to anyone. The pwc laws are way too strict and need to be changed. There is talk of allowing inter island travel, but you still cant stop at molokai or lanai.

I want to get involved and petition some reasonable change in the laws. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, so lets start squeaking.

You mentioned hitting turtles or swimmers, but there's also whales, dolphins and incredibly endangered monk seals to think about.

I'm sure you're responsible in your pwc use, but I'm also sure you've seen how crazy many pwc riders are. In my opinion, the water in Maui is a better place because there aren't many pwc buzzing around.
