I'd appreciate your ideas for the most inexpensive way to get our 3 Trek bikes over from the mainland... Any suggestions please? They're too expensive to sell/ rebuy them. Mahalo!

Unless you're shipping over a container, you can ask your local bicycle shop to break them down and box them up for you, then ship them. People who do bicycle touring, or camping, or racing, do this all the time. We just had a huge triathlon down here, the athletes all shipped their bikes down in cases or boxes.

If you are not in a hurry to receive them, you might check with a freight forwarder for pricing. We like H2O Logistics, can't post a link here but you can find them. Ask for Mike Copnall, he'll tell you what's involved, but essentially you send them the items, and they put it on a ship, combining what you are sending with other customer's items. You can pick up at the dock or have door to door delivery for an added fee.

Most of the bike shipper charge around $500 from the west cost and about $600 from the east coast to ship a bike. Thats the cost of the container, shipping and local delivery via Fedex or UPS. You place the order, they ship you a container, you put the bike in, seal it up, take it to any Fedex or UPS store, they fly it over, and deliver it to your door. You can s ave some money if you already have or can get a approved shipping container/box. Places like BikeFlights can gove you online quotes. If you can hold off until there is a bucycle soport event on hawaii, you can contact tribike and they can transport it along with the racers bikes.

I appreciate your ideas - looks like H2O is out of CA so I'll email to find out more info (I'm in Seattle). I understand it's only $100 on Hawaiian Air when I come over- so far that sounds like the most cost efficient... I really like the tribike idea - I hadn't thought of something like that.

We put the bikes in the container on the ship after all. Who do y'all recommend to do tune ups on them? When we moved to Seattle, we found some biking enthusiasts that knew how to adjust brakes, etc thru Craigslist. Do you think this is a good way to go here also? I'd rather pay an individual than a shop unless the shop is real reasonable. Thoughts? Mahalo!

Ups ships large stuff here. I used to ship 50+boxes and they do great with all sizes my smallest box is wardrobe size. If you get a container stick it in there cheapest in the long run. Just read your post and guess you shipped them. I have one guy I know rides bikes might know someone I will ask.

Adjusting brakes is actually really easy. You could just read up on it, get some needle-nose pliers, etc. You can ultimately save a lot tuning your own bikes if you ride a lot.

That said, there are a lot of people apparently looking for extra cash in Hawaii. If you join a bike club, you can probably find someone willing to tune your bike for less than a shop.
