That's a not a very good way to start life on Maui when you're not even here yet. As far as driving a 'nicer' car, an F150 4WD makes a heck of a lot more sense over here than a boxtop does, and I've owned a few sports cars, both on Oahu and Maui.

Aloha

(I'd be more paranoid about the cannibals, makes more sense)

Wait, don't cannibals like sports cars too?

No self respecting cannibal would ever be caught dead in a german pseudo sports car!!!!! or was that a zombie? never mind..... BUT,, seeing as we're off the topic,,,, two local cannibals are at a party in Wailuku, eating a clown,,,,, one cannibal looks at the other and asks,,, "Hey!! Bruddah!!? dis guy taste funny to you?" BADABING!!!! BADABOOM!!!!

i'll be here all week folks, don't forget to tip the waitress.........................

A bit of background, we are both of Asian decent, and tanned "beach people". We are often confused for locals in HI. Aside from her love of speed, my wife is a very down-to-earth and friendly, she is also very cute and fit. We are both medical professionals heading over to serve the under-served population of Maui.

So, will her car cause us problems?
Looking at this post again and trying to figure out just how to word this without being offensive.
What is concerning is the thought that somehow driving a Porsche is so unique (and what....elitist?) that the "common folk" would cast the ol' stink-eye upon the driver and shun you and your wife.
IMHO that reflects a real misunderstanding of how life is here.
And why mention "cute and fit"? Cute and fit is fine, of course, but mentioning it smacks of LA-think to the max. "Down-to-earth and friendly" would have been more than enough and a nice note.
Just musing on this lovely windy windy morning---no offense meant.

I wouldn't worry about a Boxster. If she's self conscious, just don't keep it so clean so it looks older.

Lots of expensive vehicles here. The guy who fixes your toilet probably drives a $50k Toyota Tundra pickup and owns surfboards worth more than a 1st gen Boxster.

I am offended by the references to cannibals. I have some ancestors, Carib Indians, who were cannibals.
Moderator cut: image removed

Well, it might have been a myth created by the Spanish to justify enslaving them.

Thanks again for all who offered advice. It was not my intention to offend anyone, I apologize if I had come across as pretentious. I am just concerned about my wife's safety. As for my description of her being "fit and cute", this is how I view my lovely spouse in addition to her being intelligent, brave, kindhearted and caring. I sure hope it is not a crime in Maui to find one's spouse attractive =)

As for the folks worrying about cannibals, all I can say is, "Please get some help!"

Just my honest opinion, but that seems to be what you're asking for...

I really don't give stink eye, personally, but my uncensored thought would be "Geez, what a moron. More money than brains!"

Boxster is a lousy car for the islands, for all the reasons given. Service will be inconvenient and expensive, speed limits are low and most traffic is slower, many roads are rough. I think she'll be frustrated, driving around in 2nd gear all the time. Parking in public places (beaches, for example) in such a high profile car will be an invitation to mess with it.

Well, you asked...
