I've got an extra surfski!!!! Day stopover on Molokai after the Pailolo channel, spend the night at the Pau Hana.. Get up early, do the Molokai Channel and spend the night in Hawaii Kai.. Up early, take off from Sunset and an easy run over to the south shore of Kauai, piece of cake.... Don't forget to tie that Aku head to your ankle for good luck!!!

IMHO, this takes some planning. Kaua'i's features are kind of spread out, and it depends what you want to do. You're going to be flying into Lihue, but (like Kahului) there's not much there other than port/airport-related stuff.
It takes a while to drive down toward Poipu or up to Princeville/Hanalei. Really "seeing the island" takes a couple of days of driving, PLUS extra time for exploring, hiking, and/or offshore (Na Pali coast) or Waimea Canyon fly-over tours.
If you're having guests who want a one-day experience, our friends (most of whom head to Oahu/Honolulu/Arizona Memorial) have had the best luck with American Express/Polynesian Adventure Tours. But they are exhausting! They typically leave at dawn and come back to Kahului after 9PM.
Sorry to nitpick, but what -- exactly -- are you looking for? Daytrip to Kaua'i is like daytrip to Moloka'i -- only bigger island. Lots to see, but easier to see what you want with a plan.
Best of luck.

Reason: clarification
I wouldn't do a day trip...there are direct flights from OGG to LIH but they can be pretty price and still take about an hour or so. The majority of flights have you stopping in Oahu and by then you've lost a lot of time. Plus driving from the airport to the North Shore takes an hour and a half and from the airport to Kekaha is about an hour+...with the prices of airfare being what they are, I wouldn't waste the money or stress about time.
And a daytrip to Kauai is not like a daytrip to Molokai...I think you can do Molokai much more easily than Kauai- Molokai is smaller with less to see!
