We are looking to spend four days in Maui. Everyone tells us to travel around the island to Hana. Is there a good place to stay in hana that wont break the bank?

Any suggestions on what to do the other days would also be appreciated.
We are fairly active and would rather surf or hike a few hours than sit on a beach

We live in Oahu but have only been to kuai.

Thanks!

A few years ago I stayed at the Bamboo Inn in Hana. Here's what I wrote about it at the time:

Bamboo Inn in Hana: If you're going to do the road to Hana, I STRONGLY suggest staying there overnight. We set out later in the day (about noon), so missed most of the traffic because so many people try to get the whole drive in a single day. We stayed two nights, letting us explore the beaches in Hana a bit and even backtrack to a couple of the sites on the Hana Highway that we missed. We left the 2nd morning to do the second half of the drive, and had a couple of places to ourselves because we were there before most of the traffic. Doing the drive over two days also let us stop at LOTS of waterfalls and swimming holes. The Bamboo Inn was great... simple but beautifully decorated and maintained rooms. Ours had an outdoor shower and a hot tub on the lanai that overlooked the bay. There was a small but useful kitchen, so we could buy food and prep it. Useful to save money, and also because dining options are both limited and close up early in Hana. Highly recommended.

Thanks everyone for the recomendations.
The bamboo in was very nice.

One thing I didnt do that I should have.
Driven up to the top of Maui to see the stars at night.
I saw the sunrise. A lot of good places to see the sun rise in the morning.
But having spent most of my time living in Cities like Tokyo or Chicago, there is nothing like the raw sky and stars at night.
