what do surfers do for a living?
how are they able to be surfing almost on a daily basis? (or maybe it seems like that)

we came to hawaii twice, each for 10 days, and every day, we saw people (sometimes the same people) at the beach, morning, midday, evening, etc. as if they had nothing else to do.

anyway, can someone shed some light on this?

"Professional surfers" usually earn a living by endorsing products and winning events.

"Non-professional surfers" come from all walks of life -- some are homeless folks living in cars and vans at the beach, while others might be retired millionaires.

A lot of the job market is hotel/tour industry, especially during the night time. So there's quite a few people who have night time jobs that spend the day at the beach before they go in.

There's also quite a few morning jobs that people finish by 10am, that do the same thing. Snorkle/dive guides, sunrise guides, and the graveyard shifts for electric, maui supercomputer, and hotel concierge. Who knows you might have just met up with a bunch of other visitors too.

I spent a number of years with a priority of working jobs where I had mornings and early afternoons off. The hotel industry, restaurants, etc, offer flexible hours.

And let us not overlook the obvious... there are people who come for vacation, and all they do during the day is surf.
