Should learn to throw rocks and run just in case if it bounces back at you.

Or learn to climb the tree(I seen it)

It would be great if the County would enforce vacation rental regulations. If these landlords had to pay the higher tax, they wouldn't be as inclined to rent short term to visitors...

Oh now there is some kind of permit for short term vacation rentals. Maybe that explains the higher rent.

It's kind of funny because ads for rooms for rent and condos for rent always say they want a "professional" tenant. Professionals on Maui don't make enough for what they're charging. They should specify that they're looking for doctors, lawyers, escorts, or trustafarians.

Median household income on Maui is $64K - plenty of households that can afford the rent.

Wink,

I don't know the specifics about your reason for going back to the Islands, but I'm curious why Maui? You've inferred that the job is low-paying, outside of your field-of-study (GIS) and you seem to be taking a gamble with your photography business. This, coupled with the inability to find housing that meets your expectations, makes me wonder why you don't consider Oahu where there could be more opportunities.

Is it the familiarity of Maui and Kihei that draws you back to the area specifically?

Hi Winkosmosis, I'm glad to hear you're making your way back to Maui. And thanks for the pictures again. I just took a week of vacation on Maui, and I can understand the attraction. We have friends in Pukalani, and they're looking to move to Makawao, and both of those areas are very livable (don't know the prices, tho). Yes, you need a car in those areas, but you already knew that. I hope you find a cheap, small car that is good on gas this time (think honda fit, kia rio, or other small import).

MKWC, I can't answer for Wink, but I can see the attraction of Maui now. Compared to Maui, Kauai and what I've seen of the Big Island (mostly Hilo and Volcano area) seem like sleepy backwaters. Maui has a critical mass of tourism and other activity and things seem to "happen" there. Our friends who moved from Kaua'i to Maui said the same thing (husband got a computer job on Maui, wife sells jewelry to the tourist stores). And yes, it's full of tourists and traffic, but there are also beautiful, wide open views from one mountain to the other (and one island to another). Now I understand why it's called the Valley isle. And we could spend a whole vacation exploring just the Hana coast, it was our favorite part. Maui's not too big (like BI's land area or Oahu's population), and not too small (like Kaua'i for many things).
