Is your $2700 after or before tax? If it's gross income, federal and state taxes will get you down to make $1900. You can rent a room for $800-1000.

You don't have to worry about bachelors and bachelorettes tripping on your front porch.... You can't afford to live in any of those tourist areas, not even if 100% of your income went to rent. No offense but to a resident it's kind of comical that you're concerned about that. Your main concern in reality will be finding a good safe place to live with your budget. Try Makawao or Pukalani. Kihei isn't conducive to working from home during the day because it's so hot

Photography pays lower than McDonald's... Look at the job listings on Craigslist. $8-10 an hour!

If you do move you're welcome to hang out with me and my transplant friends. Most are techies and some work from home too, and are generally into the things you listed. Last night my friend held a pizza making party with a pizza stone on the grill

I am begging you to leave your dog on the mainland, please do not take him to Hawaii with you *unless* you are going to jump through all the hoops to do 'Direct Release.'
If you are planning on allowing your pooch to be quarantined, please don't. I hope you decide not to take him with you. I have heard many, many horror stories of animals dying in quarantine from poor treatment and simply from broken hearts. It's just horrible. No joke. It's a horror show.

Your income is actually very strong, *many* people scrape by [successfully] on only around 1,000 a month. Because you are part Korean, you likely will be accepted fairly easily as a "local" (plantation background as opposed to white haole) and it will make life a bit easier for you socially in Hawaii.

As has been mentioned, it's going to be tough to find a rental that'll let you have the dog. It's also really tough to find a rental while on the mainland because landlords are hesitant to rent something that way. You'll want to inspect any rental (and the neighborhood) and not rely on pictures.

If you have family or friends willing to dog-sit, I'd suggest coming without the pooch and living in something temporary like a vacation rental until you can find something more permanent. You may want to have a pic or video of the dog on your phone so you can show potential landlords or roommates the size of the dog and its friendliness.

Once you find a place, then you can bring Fido out following the "direct release" procedures.

A person can live on such an income if they (1) reside with extended family, (2) rent a room, (3) share an inexpensive flat with roomates, or (4) if they're together with a partner/spouse who also brings in an income. And of course location impacts rent prices in a big way.

But the bottom line is that Hawaii is a huge money suck, it is very difficult for most people to actually save any money. Many, many people in Hawaii essentially live paycheck to paycheck with no hope of ever in their lives accumulating enough for a down-payment on a home or condo.

Let's pretend for argument sake one gets a room for $400/month.

On your $1,000/month example, that leaves $20/day for food, transportation, utilities, and other (clothes, sundries, medical, etc). Not exactly a budget one thrives on.

Who said anything about "thriving?" It's certainly not possible to live the highlife in Maui on such an income with lobster dinners and sunset cruises and all your wishes taken care of. But with careful budgeting, it's possible to live on such an income without being homeless. If one works full time hours, you'll get health insurance. And one might opt to use public transportation + a bicycle + walking to get places rather than own a car which would entail paying for gas/insurance/maintenance...

There are a lot of people who want to live up to the standard of life they had on the mainland when they move to Hawaii, but obviously on 1,000 a month that would not be possible. But people move to Maui for the beaches, rainbows, and incredible scenery, all of which are free. A lot of people are willing to sacrifice creature comforts to be able to live among the beauty that Hawaii is famous for. Careful budgeting & sacrifice are obviously a part of that equation.
