I spent a good amount of time years ago on here, particularly after returning from the BI and trying to get a feel for reality of life there.

Never made it back to even visit, but as it turns out, I am meeting with some friends here in the next month or so out there. As such, been browsing here a few hours, trying to catch up.

Me - earlyish 40's, single, no kids. Spinning wheels and staring at a concrete wall of frustration and dead ends. 1 friend does some wwoofing, the other a scuba diving instructor. I don't expect Maui to be some magical cure-all, and my eyes are wide open, but everything is aligned so well, I feel like I have to give this a shot. I've almost literally nothing left to lose.

Anyway, I have a plan. Reasonable expectations; no desire to date, see museums aside from Hawaiian culture, etc. My head is in the perfect place for this, and I'm confirming my ticket in a few after I sell some things so I can ditch my last and only bill, storage space.

I see some familiar names, and mostly thought I'd pop in and say hello. Got a kick reading some of the troll posts. Hope all is well.

Is employment part of your reasonable expectations? Along with affordable housing? Well, bring friends and see if you can split the rent three ways.

Since we're a tourist based economy and there's very few tourists anymore, unemployment is running really high these days. Keep enough $$$ for a return ticket in case you need it. Maui is more expensive than BI, but it's gotten more expensive on Hawaii Island since you saw it last.

For the last month available the unemployment rate on Maui was 21.5% the highest in the nation.

When the eviction moratorium ends will be interesting to see what happens.

Tell me you have a financial game plan. That you have strong savings and well funded 401k already. Maui will be “fun” but also a financial black hole for whatever years you’ll live there. At ~40 you’re in prime earning years. Should be focusing on long term investments and getting on the property ladder. I hope you’re successful. Not trying to troll.

Well welcome back although this forum seems pretty quiet of late the last few months.
