Aloha,
After 5 years away from Maui, I'm returning now in April and hoping that I'll be able to choose a good public kindergarten for my 5 year old son. I'm very open to where we live on the island and basically his school will dictate where we live.

I've heard good things about Haiku Elementary and am intrigued by the new Kihei Charter School. I really hope to choose a good elementary school, so that he can go K - 5 at the same school.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

If Maui is like the Big Island, your kid won't get into the charter for at least 2+ years. There is a long waiting list and no matter how smart the kid is, how good the grades, etc, have been, they go on the waiting list. If and when there is an opening, you would get notified.

I hope you have better luck on Maui.

Thanks for the answer and the heads up. I'm pretty much planning on Haiku Elementary at this point and would love to hear of any teacher recs for any of the grades, especially kindergarten at this point. I'm going to a meeting at Kihei Charter School this week and will be interested to hear more about my son's chances of getting in to the kindergarten class. I wish I had known about this school issue, so that I could have planned our return better. Just missed the Census job test and now have to wait until Sep : ( Anyway, know any secrets to getting a job late? I worked the Census in 2000 on Maui and had a great time. The unemployment was especially good! Might come in handy this year...
