Mazda makes great handling FWD cars. What if Mazda would build a RWD sports sedan with their engineering skills on suspension tuning? Didn't Mazda use to make a RWD sports sedan a few decades ago? They could do a compact sedan with the MazdaSpeed3 engine.

They better come up with something soon. Save for the 3, they really don't have anything worthwhile. Really stale company.
RX8 is not much of a sedan. I'm sure there are non-US market sedans that would prove that Mazda can make a good handling sedan though.
Mazda has proven time and again that it can make a good-handling sedan. It's just that lately they're all FWD. And while the RX-8 may not be "much of a sedan" (its postage-stamp rear suicide doors notwithstanding), it's really only a few packaging changes away from being the kind of compact sedan the OP is talking about.
But the main issue with the RX-8 is the "RX" portion of it. I fear the rotary is not long for this world as emissions and fuel economy requirements grow ever tighter.
Better then any other Japanesse car company out there. In my opnion they have more soul then others. Something car some car companies lack these days.
I'm not really a fan of Toyota or Honda or Subaru, but their reputations can carry them. Mazda doesn't have that reliability reputation ace in the hole to cover for them. Nissan doesn't have Toyota/Honda/Subie reliability either, but they do have product with some "soul", which carries them through. Mazda(and Nissan) started gaining alot of traction in the US market ~8 years ago. Nissan held onto it, Mazda didn't. I expect Mazda will end up like Mitsubishi. Die a slow prolonged death in our market.

I love German cars always have I love the way they feel & drive. Mazda, Mitsubshi & Subaru for me at least come closer then Toyota or Honda ever will. Or any other Japanesse car maker. Nissan used to have soul but some how I felt they lost it. The 270 is a nice car but didn't have the feel of a 240/260 of old.
When Mazda came with out with the Miata they blew everyone away. I thought the car was over rated untill I drove one & I'm not easily impressed but that car blew me away.

Interesting you're worried about Mazda's longevity here but not Nissan, seeing how Mazda has a larger U.S. market share than Nissan -- and that includes Infiniti.
