The engine is so underpowered, and it is not a SUV.
I think crossover is a more accurate.
I considered the CX5 briefly but starting at around $23k for a base model with automatic transmission, I felt that I got more dollar for dollar with a Hyundai Tucson GLS. Tucson gets slightly less mileage but I didn't think it was enough to really make that big of a difference.
Wait mid-year for the 2014 model. They're giving it a performance bump from 155hp to a 2.5 liter 184hp/185lb-ft tq engine. Mazda is even claiming to maintain the same mpg as the 2.0 motor.

I read the news, I will probably have to wait it out...it would be really sweet if they would give it the 2.2L diesel planned for 2014 Mazda 6...
Since it is a light vehicle (supposedly the CX5 for 2014 will be lighter than Mazda 3) even the 2L is not a bad one. At minimum wait for incentive for the 2013 "dogs" to clear the lot.
Since it will be wife's car, it doesn't need lots of power anyway...
Do some research to see if buyers are seeing anywhere near that for fuel economy. As I am sure you know, the EPA results can really vary by car and the driver... I tend to find the less powerful the engine the farther from the EPA figures the car will get (since I end up working less powerful engines harder to get up to speed).
In dash storage sucks. Just a couple of holes in the dash. No doors, no trays, just holes made of slippery plastic. A total waste of space. Probably the only turn off I found when we drove one.
