It is a beautiful design and is still a very quick and superb handling car even in stock form.
Having owned a '86 and '93 I will agree with this statement. While my '93 was fast (single T78 turbo) it was only fun while it lasted. It was constantly one thing after another, all were unrelated to each other, and only few had something to do with the build.

My neighbor has had a modified FD running for the past five years without any unexpected issues (replaced apex seals).
Maybe if you knew how to read, your response would have been different. I specifically posted "FD3S RX7". That should have told you that I was referring to the 3rd gen RX7 and not all RX7's.
You obviously fail at even comprehending your own words, since while your first sentence talks about the RX-7, your next sentence states your bewilderment at Mazda making a rotary-powered car. I'm sorry you don't know what you're talking about.

So, you had an aftermarket modded RX-7 and had issues - that could be the car, could be a shoddy modification job. I'm not sure if you can honestly blame Mazda for the issues you had with your car since you didn't have a factory version, even though FDs have a well-deserved reputation for not being reliable.
I am aware of several issue with rotary powered cars...
but, the RX-7s were an absolute blast to drive. Superb handling and mid-range acceleration that was fabulous! They were very successful in SCCA racing as well.
True... I think they are great track cars though - quick, agile, easy to feel out as you drive them.
In General, Mazda and Nissan are probably the best Japanese sports car automakers imo.
