It was a very shameful thing to do. Now go forward into the New Testament. Christ is Firstborn of A-L-L creation! Therefore it is His duty as firsborn to be all creations kinsman redeemer! If He fails to redeem all creation, it will be the duty of all creation to spit in His face and for ever be called the House of the Pulled-Off Sandal.
Christ redeemed all mankind and all creation. They all will eventualy enter into God's reconciliation and salvation! BTW, no one can make Christ go back to the cross and un-redeem them. It is impossible!
Saviour of all Fellowship, universal reconciliation, salvation of all mankind

Redeem in the O.T. has similar applications. Read the book of Ruth. Via Boaz redeeming Ruth and her property came THE Redeemer, Jesus Christ. The duty of the near kinsman redeemer is thus: if a sister-in-law's husband died and left her childless, it is the responsibility of the new kinsman to marry her to raise up seed on behalf of the deceased to carry on the deceased name. Should he refuse to do so, she is to take his sandal, spit in his face in front of the elders of Israel and from that time on that kinsman will be called "House of the Pulled-Off Sandal."

Ransom is my specialty these days. It is really an awesome subject. In the O.T. if a Hebrew sold himself as a slave and was given a wife by the slave holder, the children of that marriage belong to the slave holder as does the wife. If a kinsman redeemer of the slave came to ransom the slave, that slave had to decide if he wanted ransomed. If so, he would have to leave the wife and children behind. Once the ransom was made there was no turning back. He had to be freed. Forward that thought into the New Testament where Christ ransomed all mankind in 1 Timothy 2:6. And what is the result of that ransom? All mankind must be freed into God's salvation (1 Timothy 2:4). Cool, huh?
