    (continued, message was too long)

Alaska, well, you can get land with no property taxes in the unorganized borough outside of any incorporated city. Land itself is anywhere from downright cheap to absurdly expensive, based on location. But if you want electricity, running water, etc. (all the modern conveniences) it'll be expensive. If you can use wood heat from your own land, grow and/or hunt/fish for some of your food, live with less, etc., it can be the perfect place for a self-sufficiency minded person (though in the Northern parts, with a very harsh winter climate). It is pretty isolated from the rest of the country, of course, making travel to the rest of the country and shipping things there expensive. My move to AK is not going to be cheap.

Well, I guess you'll have to sit down and figure out which one offers the most of what you're looking for. NH, MI and VT are all high taxed and regulated states, and land prices are often high in VT and NH (MI varies). ME is too (expensive, regulated, taxed) but depending on where you are there property and property taxes can be more affordable (in Northern Maine in real rural areas outside of the boundaries of any local government with high taxes is nice, Southern Maine is more like Northern MA in my opinion, I've been to Maine, the differences of North versus South are at times stunning).
