Picture West Side of the Creek, San Antonio's District
The red light district was legalized in 1886 by the City Council of San Antonio. Mamie Eisenhower, Dwight Eisenhower's wife, saw an article in Life Magazine that named San Antonio as having a district. She persuaded Dwight, commandant at Ft. Sam, to close the district. He put pressure on the City Council and it was closed in the last months of 1941 and early 1942.
