We've been searching for a suitable, affordable plot of land for retirement for over a year now. My wife wanted to be near relatives so that's the only guideline I need to adhere to. I grew up in central AL but have lived and worked in too many states to count and didn't have a real preference.

I did refuse to move back "home" but we settled on a location near one of the largest universities in AL. After visiting friends there in 2017, my wife signed off on the location...

Well, man plans, God laughs. My contact and I had a handshake agreement for them to sell me ~ 10 acres of land and I was told that we'd close just after Thanksgiving. He was going to call for a survey and then, get the paperwork going.

Didn't happen.

He called me in early Nov and said that a timber real estate trust came in and wanted to buy it all. He asked if we'd mind taking a smaller portion of land or move about a 0.25 mile up the road.

While on the trip, I made a note of the land guy who worked with my buddy. When we got back to AZ, I contacted him and introduced myself and told him what I was looking for: 4-5 acres as close to my buddy as I could realistically purchase.

Over the few months, it appeared that they would put together a sale of lots between 5 and 15 acres in a gated community. Auburn is in Lee County and apparently, gated developments arenít allowed there. This will be just across...

My research pointed me to the Auburn/Opelika area. I went to school in Auburn and it's hit the 'best places to retire'-type lists in the past. I worked at the local Opelika hospital while in school and it still has a good reputation for healthcare.

I found out that a good friend had settled on several hundred acres outside of Opelika and that made a Thanksgiving visit in 2017 easy to plan. Needless to say, my wife loved their location, the land and the area. While I just took this...

I'd like to start what I hope will be an updated thread on our retirement dreams and plans as we progress over the next few years. This might go well or... not. Man plans/God laughs.

If you haven't seen any of my previous posts, I'm a very happy, generally optimistic person. While I can retire anytime I want, my wife won't retire for 5-6 years so I decided to work a little more. Due to significant headwinds at work, I don't think my services will be needed by this time next year....
