Relay For Life: May 21-22, 2010
I just returned home from the 2010 Relay For Life event in my town. For those who don't know, it is an event (similar ones are held throughout the U.S.) to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Relay teams raise money for several months prior to the actual Relay weekend event. Relay is a 24-hour walkathon. Teams set up camps at the site and members take turns (or may all walk together) throughout the night.

It poured rain most of Friday and then was foggy all night; then the rain resumed just as we started to tear down the camp this morning (Saturday). I have now been up for 29 hours! I'm exhausted, achy and have blisters on my feet. But instead of whining, I just remind myself that my discomfort is NOTHING when compared to what cancer patients go through. It's not about me - I walk for them!

I wanted to share with you some photos of my team's 2010 Relay experience. We've all been touched by cancer, directly or indirectly, and I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to participate in a Relay For Life in their hometown, to do so, or to sponsor a Relay participant with a generous donation!

Enjoy the photos!

More luminaria. The candles burn all night long and well into the morning. What a lovely tribute!
We light luminaria in honor of cancer survivors and in memory of those who have lost the battle. It is so beautiful and moving, to see hundreds of...
Still foggy at 6:30 a.m. We never did see the sun! We've been up for almost 24 hours at this point.
Moon Over Relay! (Okay, so we were slap-happy from lack of sleep! That's our excuse, and we're sticking with it!)
Relay Chicks at 3 a.m.!
Two of my team members huddled under the canopy, waiting out the rain!
A survivor, Jack, and his wife. He was very sick from having chemo the day before, so they could not stay. But they managed to stop by and say hello...
Some of our Relay team members at our campsite, just after the rain stopped on Friday evening.
Cancer Survivors are in the dark purple shirts. That's me in the green "team captain" shirt.
More Survivors!
