The town I moved to (45 minutes south of Bham) was fairly traditional, with a heavy leaning toward church and family life--not my thing. The people were pleasant, but suspicious of outsiders who didn't share their values. The school I worked at (in the town) was nice in many ways (interesting people, pretty surroundings), but most of the students were ill prepared for academic work, and many were so evangelical that I felt uncomfortable. If I had been able to live in Birmingham or one of the Bham inner-ring burbs, I would've liked it more.

All that said, in terms of flora and fauna, Alabama is gorgeous. I think its physical beauty is overlooked by people who focus too much on the human culture part of the state.
