    You stated:

What are some small cities and towns (under 100,000 people) that people have visited which have extensive intellectual (educational, scientific) and arts and cultural amenities? I'm only familiar with some places in the US West.

I now live in the east and am looking for small relaxing places like this. Any ideas? Towns from anywhere in the US would be greatly appreciated.

Are you still in Philly? I'm in Philly, and am actually thinking about moving back to Burlington, VT! It's the kind of place you're describing!
