It took me a while to figure out what you were talking about! (Pluto... Grant... I just went to Amazon, and read a bit of the book) But thank you! And I'm hoping that Grant validates ME, since I seem to be under attack- AGAIN. What is it with all these male losers stalking me? Apparently, I disrupt their narcissistic supply in some way. But no: I hadn't heard that story: is that an old joke about the elephant? ...like the Yiddish Theatre story about the man riding the camel up and down Collins Avenue, in Miami? Or is it a Grant story from the Delta?

Glad you liked! Alabamy Bound is MY fave! Her sound effects are so suggestive - and not suggestive of trains... Thanks for getting that thread off to a raucous start! And yes: I think she and the Lumberjacks probably had a BLAST: about like Mae West and the bodybuilders in her 'Revue' (several of whom went on to make a famous all-male porno without her - including Rik Drasin, who went on to become a pro wrestler).

    Part One:

So much originates with Purim, I'm not sure where to begin. Sayings like 'The Whole Megillah' originate with the differences in observance (some people insist that the WHOLE scroll be unrolled before the reading commences...), and on and on. The story is very complicated, and involves so many names your head will be spinning.

There is much pressure to make Purim into a big joke, especially among the more downmarket sects where the men aren't particularly attractive. But basically, the King of Persia got drunk and told his wife to parade, naked, in front of the assembled menfolk. She had a skin condition at the time, and so refused. So, she was kicked off the throne, and there was a selection made, from among the women of the many nations in the Persian Empire. A Jewish girl was selected. She didn't let on that she was Jewish. Meanwhile, there was a plot to exterminate all the Jews in Persia.

    Part Two:

The Queen's role in foiling the plot is crucial in explaining the conundrum revolving around G--'s gift of Free Will, versus the fact that he is in control of all the Universe, including the final outcomes of everything. It's really quite beautiful, and, in my view, and the collective view of Mississippi's Jews, extremely holy and precious. We tend to concentrate on theory, and the transcendent aspects of the gift, rather than the many zany angles which can be derived from the potentially ridiculous story. So, for us, it's more a time of study, than an excuse for a wild party.

I think this explains best, the way we see Purim: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG7UeaKE_dc If you see similarities between this, and beliefs within Protestant sects like the Presbyterians and Methodists, it is not coincidental. There has been much interchange of beliefs and theory, between Jews and the Norse peoples, over the past Millennium.

Thank you! Glad you saw it, before they changed the picture on me. Without the picture, it didn't make much sense.

From the looks of it, you're the only one who's even READ my post on the 'conflicted' thread. Pity. It drives me crazy, when people have babies for whom they have no apparent intention to provide. And the, when the Grandparents come in as ENABLERS... I know some wealthy grandparents who are giving the grandchildren EVERYTHING (multi-million Dollar beach houses, for starters), while allowing them to have NEVER GONE TO COLLEGE, not work, not exercise (even if they're stupid, they could at least make the most of their bodies, and thus marry well). But NOOOOOO! The Grandparents apparently WANT to just keep the Grandchildren as helpless, dependent, PETS. The kids are growing up as total nudnik lumps. My head could EXPLODE, when I think about it.

I think that the Inheritance Tax severely reduced the legitimate Intellectual Class. Vidal and Buckley were both from wealthy families. Today, every generation has to either go into something which makes big money, or live in peril of becoming impoverished. Nobody can AFFORD to be an intellectual. Funny thing about Buckley and Vidal: they both had a lot of valid points. Today, all we hear is babble.

And yes! The Duncans would steal oranges from the Steins' trees (...not a big deal, of course. And I don't think the families actually met.)

I agree. Someone's being pro-Border-Control trumps issues like his being Gay but homophobic. At least Perry only hates Gay people (including, probably, himself). Bush hates Gay people, hates white people (starting with his parents, I think), and really, really REALLY hates Protestants. His getting into office would turn the World's clock back to 1492. As a Jew, I consider that a very scary thought. We did not enjoy the Inquisition.

Interesting you see Democrats as necrotic bacteria, and Republicans as a brain-eating prion. I like the analogy. I always saw Republican politicos as dominatrix hookers, in tacky leather outfits, wielding whips, and Democrats as softer prostitutes - the marabou/satin/lace types.

    continued...

Anyway, the lovely people of that hood were the ones, egged-on by the "hilarious jocks" at the Country Music station, who circulated petitions, and stormed City Council meetings - and harassed our Mayor, until she relented, and had the building ruined. Behind all of that were the BIG criminals seeking to discredit the Mayor, since she stood in the way of their raping the town and the county. Jackson Jambalaya: The Queen's speech.

Several dozen of us have a file, with the names of everybody involved in that sad chapter, when they cut those ten twelve-thousand-Dollar urns of the building, and out of the city's skyline (where they were breathtakingly beautiful).
