    Thanks for the response, Yes you are right, and yes the contractor said 40 degrees is the 'switch point' I'll check the greenbuildingtalk site.

    My plan is to improve the heating in 2012 - the fed tax break may be different. But I've been told that where the house is, there is much rock, and getting the benefits of geo is expensive. We investigate further.

    In your post you describe the differences between the different heating sources.

    My contractor is suggesting a hybrid heat pump for Wayne County, PA. I've just heard so much bad, but must believe my contractor is honest - we are friends. So please share more of your opinion - is a heat pump reasonable - when you want both heat and cooling.
