D/FW is actually a fine area. I do feel that it is "snobbier" than Houston per se.

Both areas can be friendly but you feel a more materialist and class sense in Dallas. You can accidentally walk into an expensive Houston restaurant (mistaking it for a trendy coffee house) but not feel intrusive simply for walking in under-dressed. Try doing that in similar L.A. or Dallas spots, lol.

As far as being cosmopolitan, Houston is definitely ahead in terms of social acceptance, offering that mass international vibe.

This was a cogent review, partially quoted below. I am from NYC, have lived many places, considering DFW but finds it lacks that cosmopolitan quality you are describing. DFW is VERY impressed with money, which I find to be very backwater. Will you confirm that DFW is more limited in this regard than Houston? Also, do you agree that Houston is overall friendlier? On DFW's plus side, what do you happen to see? What I see and feel here is a lot of wanna-be'ism and going into debt for that car that will impress. Thanks for any insight.

The cute concrete environs of the more hyped smaller towns don't even begin to match that genuine Houston urban vibe like that. Just that juxtaposition of many different types of spots and people make Houston more "hip" than Austin or Portland. It's just that futuristic Blade Runner sci-fi vibe of downtown Houston itself just adds to that edge.
