Question Young Couple moving to MEM in a month - help please =)

Hello Memphians,

We are an indian couple planning on a move to Memphis TN, in about a month! We are relocating from VA and we understand the safety issues in the city my husband will be working near the memphis airport. Can anyone please guide us in finding an apartment or a house in the germantown or mud island area ? (which seem to be the relatively safer areas) or any other suggestions of safer areas to rent will be appreciated. Somewhere with a shorter commute and close to all the entertainment would be good =). We are hoping to rent for around $1000

Thanks Much!

My wife and I are in the same boat (relocating, working near airport), and the folks here have been fantastic at giving us a few resources. Check out the sticky note "Map of Memphis Neighborhoods" for a guide on areas,
Sticky: Map of Memphis Neighborhoods

and we have had success looking for property using this site:
Crye-Leike Property Management (check the "Memphis" box):

Memphis rentals, Nashville rentals, Little Rock rentals, Atlanta rentals, rentals homes and apartments for rent and Property Management Services

good luck, and read some of the previous posts with similar titles to get tips on other's relocation questions. There are a lot of questions already answered.

@ Anonell - thanks for your quick response, I did indeed checkout the map, it was really helpful in figuring out the good areas. I however had no luck in finding rental properties with the Crye-Leike website there are no properties in mud island and only one luxury home for 6 in Germantown. I think we'd prefer something smaller.. maybe a 2 bdroom/2 bath townhouse /condo.

Have you zero'ed down on areas to rent?

My husband and I used to live in the Fairfax Manor Townhouses in East Memphis (corner of Poplar Pike and Massey). It is about a block or so from the Germantown city limits. Honestly, we loved the heck out of the neighborhood and, while they weren't new or updated, we really liked the townhouses, too. The complex is small and in a very convenient location -- right off Poplar Avenue (major thoroughfare of the city), and just a few stoplights from the Expressway/I-240. The management was excellent and very nice. They took care of any issues we had pretty quickly. A 2 bed should be right under or right at $800 and a 3 bed would be around $950+ I think. As far as I know, all units include an attic. Loved that.

The complex is gated with plenty of parking within, so your car should be right outside your patio gate. You can get units with a garage, but most don't have one. It's very close to shopping of all types, a hospital, good restaurants, doctors, dentists, pharmacies, banks, etc. A new Best Buy and Target were just built a few minutes away in the last couple of years. There's a even small movie theater in the area near the Target. You could walk or bike to almost anything you'd need, but a car is nearly a must in Memphis. Since it's near the expressway and Poplar, it's quick and easy to get out to other parts of the city by car. It's bordered by a very nice residential neighborhood to the south and east, and by a couple of very well maintained private schools on the west. The only downside, I would say, is that it's bordered on the north (across Poplar Pike) by the railroad tracks. That may or may not bother some folks.

I agree, that area is great. Driving down Massey, between Poplar Pike and Quince is lovely with all of the beautiful trees.

Yeh, the trees along Massey and throughout that whole neighborhood are fantastic. The folks in that area really take care of their homes and lawns, so it's a great place to get outside and enjoy the greenness from the lawns to the canopy above. You see lots of folks out walking, jogging, and biking all the time.
