Yes, this is a serious question. I stay at Motel 6 when I travel because I'm on a budget. Most of my visits are what I expect- a clean, comfortable room. No frills at all.

But a few times I run across nothing more than a roach motel or some other HORRIBLE Motel 6 that falls extremely short of clean and comfortable.

I'm wanting to go to Elvis Week in 2011 and rooms are filling up FAST!

I've made several reservations at multiple places....but need to decide on WHICH one to stay so I can cancel at the others.

Motel 6 Memphis Downtown on Pauline Street
Studio 6 on American Way
Value Place Memphis Lamar/Getwell

Any advice on these? Or other places I should look into?

I wouldn't stay at any. None of those are safe, the one on Pauline is at least okay enough to drive near at night (off of Union), but I wouldn't stay there. It's also not "downtown" as they advertise. Lamar and Getwell? Wow. No.

Unfortunately you pay for safety here. Cheap=dangerous. If you have to stay somewhere extremely cheap, maybe stay outside of Memphis and then just drive in each day. Or, just bite the bullet and shell out more $$. I don't know how much a Motel 6 costs, but I can't imagine you'd find anything safe in Memphis for around those prices.

Heard you loud and clear!

Won't stay at any of those places.

There is this place "500 yards from Graceland"..... Value Place Elvis on Winchester. Haven't found any reviews. Would this place be okay during Elvis Week?

Why not use Priceline? I used their name your own price feature in Memphis in April and got the Doubletree in East Memphis for $45 per night.

Look at places to stay in Southaven, Miss. It's just over the border and has some decent places along I55, a quick shot north to the G'land area.

You do need to pay for a safe, clean place. If your plans are 2011 and you don't have to pay up front, then you may have some time to save. Whatever the timing of your reservation a nd payment, you'll be better off spending a bit more for what you need. It will be worth not putting yourself in harm's way.

When we visited Graceland a few years ago we stayed at the Sunset Inn in Collierville, just outside Memphis. The motel was clean, comfortable and no frills... a Mom 'n Pop type place. Collierville is a nice little town and it was an easy drive to Graceland the next morning.

Hope this helps.
