I think that's a weird expectation for the web and forums (or in real life in person too). Some posters think the more they post the more authority and credibility are bestowed upon them. Now that's truly 'sick' ? it's the web for heaven's sake
I'm well-qualified to make the assessment I made.

Additionally, I too can post my opinion. It's great that you think negative posters can post their opinions, but you should extend that privilege to everyone else, as well.

Now, what do you have to add about Memphis? How long have you lived here? What's your favorite part of the city? What don't you like about Memphis? How are you working to change what you don't like? What meaningful input do you have to offer people who are considering relocating to Memphis? Thanks in advance for your input.

EVERYBODY can and should post their own experiences/opinions and not be questioned or held hostage to some sort of 'examination' (personal) when simply responding to an original poster's questions about anything in Memphis...race, politics, entertainment, education or anything else.

No 'other poster' should chime in to discredit another poster personally simply because his/her opinion might be construed as 'negative', whether INSIDE or OUTSIDE the community of Memphis.

This and other sites are not, and should not be appendages of the Chamber of Commerce, or the Visitors and Convention Burean of the area..that's silly and inappropriate.

My role as a poster is to offer a response and opinion that is based on my own experience. Others are free to do the same..agree, disagree or anything else.

It's not a mutual admiration society where everyone must agree about what is good about Memphis or what is horrible about Memphis. No one is 'required' to state positives OR negatives, and certainly no one must meet some artifical 'test' and questioning to legitimize their own experiences or opinions about Memphis, TN (or anywhere else ).

This is not a contest. It's not a battle for friends. It's not a 'back-slapping' session for Memphis or any other city. No poster should suggest that another poster must prove anything about themselves to any other poster. That itself is crazy.

Readers can come to conclusions on their own. Who cares ? People have their own minds to consider things on their own.

The role of this site doesn't seem to be the promotion of migration, relocation or any other consideration. It's merely an exchange of thought and opinion. It's not for public relations purposes. That's the purview of paid 'promoters' on contract to a city.

As for real negatives about Memphis, this site is not needed to be fully aware of those. Information about Memphis is not found in a singular location, book, web site, or FBI report.

Futhermore, it seems unlikely that posters fabricate every negative opinion set forth on this site, or anywhere else, about Memphis, or any other city in the nation. People DO have different experiences and opinions you know, and of course they should be in a free discourse.

Posters are free to state their own thoughts, without being required to answer crazy stuff like " well how long have you lived in Memphis ? " or "what are you doing to change what you don't like? " THAT is not of consequence in providing a personal thought and opinion. Posters are 'required' to 'change' anything. Posters aren't 'required' to live in Memphis or any other city a requisite 'amount of time', in order to express a negative (or positive) opinion.

The best thing is simply to ignore opinions that irk you, and let the chips fall where they may......simple

I'm coming to vist Memphis......again! I left there 6 months ago and can't wait to be back in Memphis......"Hey everybody, what's UP!!!" I lived in Memphis for 16 months and I really enjoyed being there. I can hardly wait to see Beale St. again, I hope the "flippers" are still doing their stuff.
I gotta get some BarBQue pulled pork and ribs, what was that blue slurpee stuff that knocked me on my ass? Gotta try that again. Gonna go over to the VA and see all my friends where I used to work. If I get the chance to get a job at the VA again...I'll take it, it will be for more $$$$ so, it will be even better. Right now I'm side tracked in Arizona for another 18 months. Lots of good people live in Memphis....including my son and grandkids. I like the people there too. Don't knock the blacks either, they always treated me right, if not better than the whites. My best friend from Memphis is Black and I love his family and will eat a nice dinner with them this Sunday, I can't wait.......Memphis is my home of choice.

Default Welcome Bacl!

Absolutely. What you remember is what it is, and we look forward to your return! Another thought:

My Dad died almost a year ago this week. He was a WWII vet, and you guys treated him like a king every time I took him in to the V.A. even though he repeated his stories and lost his hearing aids over & over, you made him feel appreciated and not ignored & forgotten. You rock as far as I'm concerned.

Mississippi Major Riverside city has almost the same condition as Memphis. Such as one major city in the upriver, and one famous in downriver. However, these two cities has national level distinguished university, but Memphis not.

OK- to Strumpeace, (901), 80sKid, REPBOY and the rest: In retrospect, asking a web forum a question about what happened to MY perception of my hometown was not the smartest move. I did find, simply by the thoughts provoked and in some cases, the passion by which some of you answered, it seems that everyone who ever cared about the city still do, regardless of how they feel about it's current situation. I was only curious if people were concerned that the city seemed to be less than vibrant and growing with success. I purposly eliminated some large factors that affect peoples emotions (such as the economy) because I believed that wasn't the main reason things seemed so bad, but when you eliminate one factor that people can't control, they turn to another, which sadly was race.
Memphis IS the black and white communities. Race has been an issue for MANY years but has never stopped the pride of any individual that lived there in the past. I hope that things for our nation as a whole improve and in turn Memphis, as well as many other metro areas that are struggeling can improve their fortunes.
I honestly thank all who attempted to answer and those that pointed out what they saw as flaws with the question, and even the reason for my post. I also want to apologize to those that I offended by stating MY perceptions from what I saw and expierenced versus what I expected and was familiar with in the past. What is gold to one person, is just metal to another, and by that I mean that what I thought was great back in the 80's and 90's may not have been as bright and shiny as I felt it was. Most importantly, I want to apologize to my home: Memphis. It has always been a place of pride for me, and a place that I have, and will always call home.
No matter what- please, those of you that live there, do whatever you can to make your contributions to OUR home, whatever you feel they can or should be, and I will do my best to represent Memphis, and the people who live there in a positive way.

1) it is 'less vibrant' than a lot of other places...no need to apologize

2) 'Race' has been and continues to be at issue in Memphis, TN..more so than many other vibrant, alive and progressive areas in the nation and the south as well. Memphis' establishment has given itself 'permission' to be mired in such muck...no visitor, transplant or otherwise newcomer can be held accountable for this...and certainly not this poster

3) Representation ?? heck my duty is to represent myself and my own values, not to represent a city or a city's culture that is obviously problematic from a historical , educational, and political perspective.

Heck, I don't prop up my own 'hometown(s)' one bit..that's not my duty either. My homtown(s) have lots of problems and negatives and I sure don't have the narrowness to sugarcoat glaring deficiencies..for some strange reason some natives resent the mere mention of glaring deficiencies in their so-called 'hometown' of Memphis TN, which is a formula for maintaining the obvious and convenient status quo which has held Memphis TN behind other cities. Many Memphians tend to live in a resentful state of denial, parochialism, and false pride....more so than any other city in which I have lived....by a longshot.
