So What ??

These two colleges are TINY decent schools no doubt...

BOTH are PRIVATE schools and don't serve the public educational needs...period

I mean, I think the enrollment of Rhodes fluctuates around a mealey 1700 STUDENTS on a good day

ditto Christian Brothers !!

Both are very decent colleges......but holding them up as some sort of major contributor in meeting the needs of higher education in Memphis is silly......just look at the sheer low numbers of enrollees..

Look........one report that close to 60 -70 % of the enrolless of Rhodes are from OUTSIDE the State of TN, thus outside the dumbazz city of Memphis, which needs PUBLIC higher education

similar number but lower are available for Christian Brothers..but it varies..

In other words, these two small PRIVATE and expensive educational facilities are not educating
Memphis...........period.....

Touting their small, but noted success is insignificant in the larger picture....

We don't need more Rhodes-like colleges.......we need more affordable access to public higher education, technical schools, community colleges, grants, scholarhsips, work-programs, etc....

I also bet that NO one on this forum actually finished at Rhodes for example.......lol......

I know I didn't....I attended even a more 'private' institution......lol

Visible School landed a $250,000 grant from The Assisi Foundation of Memphis to help with a $1.25 million renovation of its new campus at 200 Madison.
The grant will be matched dollar for dollar by an anonymous donor, generating $500,000 towards relocation of the 10-year-old music and worship arts college Downtown from Cooper-Young.
The school has more than 100 students pursuing careers as musicians, technicians, music business professionals and in music ministry. The renovation of the former C&I Bank building is expected to be completed in time for the 2010-2011 school year.
The Assisi Foundation began in 1994 with proceeds from the sale of St. Francis Hospital. It has awarded more than $100 million in grants in areas including health and human services, education and literacy, social justice/ethics, cultural enrichment and the arts.

Construction continues at Southwest Tennessee Community College on a new academic building that will replace the two main buildings on the school's Macon Cove campus.
The new academic building, which is designed by Looney Ricks Kiss and Fisher & Arnold, Inc., is budgeted at $17 million.

The building will include 59 new classrooms and labs, five offices. Ronald Parr, vice president of financial and administrative services for Southwest, says "It'll be 109,000 square feet, replacing 69,000 square feet we currently have."
Southwest currently opened a new campus at Hack's Cross and Forest Hill Irene to replace its Mendenhall campus, as well as constructing a new library at Macon Cove.

The two-story, 69,300-square-foot library includes a media gallery, cyber cafe/poets corner, and surround sound auditorium and multimedia conference rooms that will be available for community use. All three projects are budgeted at $60 million and being financed by the state of Tennessee.

Also in the Design/ Planning stage:

The Natural Sciences, Nursing & Biotechnology Building at the Union Ave. Campus in the Memphis Medical Center.
Construction of 3-story structure; will include a 200-seat auditorium, 16 classrooms, a nursing wing, and laboratory budgeted at $16 million. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2010.

WOLF Center
By Sherry F. Pruitt

JONESBORO — Completion of the Arkansas State University Wellness Opportunities for Life and Fitness Center is expected this month. The 84,000-square-foot WOLF recreation center was built on the site of the former Delta Hall dormitory immediately west of University Hall on Aggie Road.
When looking at the quality of the student and wellness center, campus leaders had the Student Union in mind, Dr. Rick Stripling, vice chancellor for student affairs, said. “The ultimate goal with the recreation center is we want something that will have the ‘Wow’ factor,” he said. “We want people to be pleased with it.”
The 2-level center was designed by Hastings Chivetta of St. Louis, with Brackett and Krennerich of Jonesboro as the local architect. The general contractor is CDI of Little Rock. Amenities include cardiovascular and strength training equipment, three basketball-volleyball courts, free weights, a multipurpose activity court and an indoor walking track that overlooks the basketball courts. There also is space for growth.
The center will house indoor intramural sports programs that are conducted in the Health, Physical Education and Sports Sciences complex and the fitness club in the Student Union. Participation in intramural sports has almost doubled from 850 students to more than 1,600 since 2004, Stripling said.
The grand opening of the facility is slated for Jan. 19. The center will be operational from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The $18 million facility is being funded by a bond issue. In fall 2007, ASU began collecting a recreation center fee of $5 per credit hour. Beginning this semester, the fee will increase by $2 for a total of $7 per credit hour for construction and operation and maintenance costs.

Memphis College of Art developing graduate school Downtown
Memphis Business Journal - by Andy Ashby

Memphis College of Art is looking to move its graduate school Downtown to the South Main Historic Arts District. MCA plans to purchase and renovate a five-story building at 477 S. Main for $2.9 million where it will develop the school serving more than 100 graduate students and faculty. Plans for the building include more than 55,000 square feet of educational space and a 3,500-square-foot retail storefront gallery.
The college is going before the Center City Development Corp. Wednesday morning to seek financial incentives, including a $180,000 development loan, a $40,000 retail forgivable loan and a $30,000 facade improvement grant. It will also ask the CCDC board for a $200,000 project development grant. If approved, the project could start in February and be completed by the fall. MCA's graduate program is currently housed in its Midtown campus, at 1930 Poplar Avenue.
Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects will design the project while Montgomery Martin Contractors LLC will be the general contractor. The board will also hear from lawyers T. Clifton Harviel, Barry J. McWhirter, Arthur E. Quinn and Michael J. Stengel who plan to open a 2,668-square-foot office at Lincoln America Tower.
