Nowizard, I am hearing rumblings from a lot of Collierville people that if the merger happens, they want to move to Piperton for Fayette county schools. (Or to be able to afford private schools by downsizing and lower taxes) Hold on to your hat!

What kind of idiot would leave Collierville schools for Fayette County schools? Most of the schools in Fayette County make MCS look good. Fayette County schools are hideous; that's precisely the reason that Fayette County has not grown at the pace of Tipton and DeSoto counties. Heck, I'd send my kid to school in Crittenden County (aka 'Hell') before sending him to Fayette County schools.

Exactly.

Those rumblings are just people who are upset that this issue may not work out the way they would like. A Significant population of people are not going to leave Collierville or Germantown for Fayette County because of schools. That would be insane. People are scared of the unknown and rightfully so. However, when it comes down to it I think things will be fine. The merger is not going to suddenly make Collierville and Germantown schools become MCS. The only thing that will make these schools deteriorate would be those short sighted people actually leaving. The citizens in Germantown and Collierville control the destiny of schools in their community, not this merger. Also, taxes are low in Fayette County for a reason. They do not have any infrastructure. Few cities have underground sewer, most roads are two lanes with no curb, gutter and sidewalk, there are very few traffic signals, etc. The county is rural. If the population in the county ever grows substantially you would see the taxes increase.

Fayette County has actually been growing much faster than Tipton County since 2000, albeit it is of course smaller. Fayette County had a 34.7% growth rate from 2000-2009, while Tipton County's growth rate was only 16.0%. Since about the last half of the decade, Fayette's growth has equaled and maybe even sligthly passed DeSoto. Income wise, Fayette County now has the 2nd highest
median income in the state ($74,701), and higher than DeSoto ($67,567), Shelby ($64,914), and Tipton ($57,357). If Fayette County ever got decent schools, it would fairly quickly become the premier suburban county because of the favorable taxes and better quality of life Tennessee offers.

Just curious, do you have a link for that? Here's a link for 2009 with very different numbers:
Household Median Income for Tennessee Counties | No WhiteWash!

The state's median income is around $42K, ad traditionally West TN has been below the median.

I am not good a posting looks, but you can look at the American Community Survey 3 year survey (2007-2009) on the Census Bureau website. I actually did quote the mean income, and not the median income. The website you linked ONLY included the median income for the top 20 TN counties by retail sales, and Fayette County wouldn't be listed on this.

Right now, for mean income, Fayette County is way behind Williamson County, TN, and slightly ahead of Wilson County, TN. In median income, Fayette County is 3rd behind Williamson and Wilson.

Fayette County has 5.3% of their housholds with over $200,000 in income, or 692, DeSoto County, which has 5 times as many households, only has 1,042 households over $200,000. Fayette County is easily the 2nd highest percentrage of plus $200,000 households in the state, which is why its mean income is so high.

Fayette County is the only county out of Memphis metro area (I did not check the really small and inconsequential counties) where the median and mean income is growing, which adds to my point that it could easily be the premiere suburuban county in the area, should its educational facilities and to a lesser degree infastructure improve. Of course, Shelby County being the center of education, business, and entertainment of the region, will continue to have pockets of success such as Germantown, Collierville, East Memphis, etc..

Here's a link to the census site:
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/47/47047.html

It shows Fayette County a having a median income of $51K in 2008.
I checked Wilson, Williamson, Rutherford, and Sumner and they were all higher. Madison and Davidson were lower. I didn't check any others.

Mean or Average income is not a good measure as it doesnt show you what the typical person makes. A few high incomes can really inflate the numbers. That's why you almost never see it used.

city-data shows Fayette County as having a median income of $46K in 2009. I don't know where they are getting that info.
But that's why I was interested in seeing the link, because nothing I have seen on city-data or the Census Bureau seems to the be the same as the link you read.

If you want to post it here, just go to the site, highlight the address bar across the top, copy it and then paste it here.

Hopefully with the growth and higher incomes there will soon be an improvement in schools.

I told you to go to American Community Survey, which has much newer numbers, and was only released in Mid December 2010, than the 2008 median household income as quoted on the area profile of the census bureau website.

Here is the link since you couldn't find it on the website.
American Community Survey
You must then go to American Fact Finder

Sumner median household income is $53,906
Rutherford median household income is $53,447.00
Fayette median household income is $56,905.00

Fayette did rocket past these counties very recently, just like it did DeSoto, so you have to have the most recent data. I doubt you have ever been there or else you wouldn't be questioning this. Fayette County has estate houses which rival Williamson, and really has nothing to do with the traditional lower income areas of West Tennessee, since it borders the wealthy suburbs of Memphis, including Collierville.

I have been to Fayette County, and there are indeed several large homes there, especially on the western fringe. However, the western 2/3 of the county is dirt poor. In fact, I've seen poverty in/around Somerville, Moscow, and particularly Grand Junction that should make any American/Tennessean ashamed that we allow people to live that way.

BTW, American Community Survey for rural areas (such as Fayette County) can be somewhat specious. I work with these numbers everyday and fully understand the Census Bureau's methodology. I would never rely on ACS data for anything but highly urbanized areas.

And, again, the point of earlier posts was that schools in Fayette County suck. And they do. The well-to-do white folks in Oakland may have themselves a decent elementary school now, but the remainder of Fayette County schools are hideous to say the best.
