Rendezvous is good, but you're paying for the atmosphere and not the cuisine. Pig & Whistle, Neelys, and Interstate BBQ are all great choices. In Millington, the Pig is a great choice for non-rib BBQ (their ribs could use a little work).

I just remembered where the Neely's I saw was -- It's on Jefferson, a few blocks west of the Med.not ordering bbq bologna, though. My boss comes back to work with that at least once a week.

I think you misunderstood what Mr. Brown actually said about Memphis food. I think what he was saying is that Memphis BBQ ranks with Pringles and Top Ramen and could never be anything more than dorm room junk food.
