E. Shelby Dr./Kirby Pwky area
Although I've been to Memphis quite a few times, I'm not familiar with many residential areas.
I found a home online in this area that looks great and the price seems outstanding. I'm not going to move there and buy it, but I'm curious as to what the area is like.
Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.
Also, based on information I've come across here I'm going to assume anything in the Frayser corridor would be undesireable.

Generally speaking, Frayser is out. There may be some good neighborhoods here and there, tucked away from years past, but overall I think it would be risky for someone out of town to try and buy a house there, not knowing the area.
The SE part of town is going downhill the fastest. This includes the Kirby/Shelby area. Now, that may be a little southeast of the "Hickory Hood" area that is causing that part of town to be unsafe, however generally speaking, I would avoid the SE area of the city now. I moved away from there years ago when it started getting bad, and it's just gotten worse now.
Someone else might have better info, but I can attest emphatically that the Kirby/Winchester area is very bad now, and I believe Shelby Dr is just a short ways south of Winchester.

This is accurate. Anything near Kirby and Shelby Drive is in the heart of Hickory Hill and that would be a terrible real estate investment.
