Yeah remember the Memphis nickname - "The Bluff City". The city is a good 20 or 30 feet over the river. Then travel over the bridge to Arkansas and see all that low level marshy ground in West Memphis (note-W. Memphis is actually in AR). That's where the Mississippi ends up when it overflows.
Local flooding can occur on the creeks during heavy rains, just like anywhere, but I've never heard of heavy flooding in any specific area.

Memphis Flooding
I guess maybe people think that becaue we're right next to the river? But we're up on the bluff....hundred feet or so above the river. The Arkansas side is the side that would flood, not us.
