Memphis is a nice place to live if you can travel (Germantown: crime, lawyers)

Really people? How do you feel about committing to making Memphis and Shelby County a better place? The mentality, socio-economics and lack of motivation of people in general, black, white, purple, to act and not accept anything less than above average integrity and commitment are what seemingly gets "majority black" cities in this "cliched" state of poverty, crime and laziness. People in such a state may feel like they have bigger, immediate issues. But, even the seemingly little things matter. I've seen many people in their shiny new mini-vans and sedans leave their trash at the stop sign when getting off hwy 385 and people with Mississippi license plates throw their trash out the window in "Hickory Hood". And, i'm witnessing Germantown Middle School "dumb-down" our children with calculators and GMS focuses too much on teaching them how to pass the tcap rather than the old fashioned simple learning that enables them to retain knowledge. I don't want to live in a big garbage dump full of crime, dummies and racist zombies. I've considered Canada. But, there is going to be a cross to bear where ever we run. I'm not happy with Memphis and Shelby County. The only way that I can continue to live here is by being a part of making this a city that people want to run to instead of away from.

Reason: spelling
Ummm, some of those things you have mentioned sounds like many American cities. People throw trash out all the time (even uppity people). Public schools in America been dumbing down, the best way to receive "Top-notch" education I guess is private schools to satisfy some.
But I do agree there are some people in the area who lack motivation, but complain and NEVER have a solution to try and change what they do not like. Then, there are people who do not get recognized for the great changes that is happening in our communities and leadership. (Blame the media for the lack of focus)....To answer your question, I am in school now to later one day become a leader in government here, and hopely Mayor. What better way can I make this city a even better place to live than to LEAD it ?
The schools in Germantown 'teach to the test.' So do the schools in Memphis proper. And the ones in Nashville, Atlanta, Boston, Des Moines, and Possum Grape, Arkansas. That's the nature of the education beast right now, unfortunately. My son is in what is widely considered one of the top three school districts in the state of Tennessee. And the teachers at his school 'teach to the test.' You can thank George W. Bush and a compliant Congress for the piece of garbage legislation known as No Child Left Behind that forces teachers to abandon teaching and learning in favor of memorization and repetition. You may be able to escape it in Canada, but there's no public school or public school system in the US that is immune to this hideousness.
As far as the trash problem goes, I agree with your point. Would it amaze you to know that just two decades ago, Memphis was routinely named the 'cleanest city in the US' by major publications? It seems like an eternity ago, but I do remember a time that people in Memphis cared more about their surroundings. Sadly, bad behavior is contagious. When a person notices others not caring, that person is less inclined to care. At a certain threshold, the bad behavior becomes the norm and becomes, simply, behavior with no connotation (bad) attached.
I've visited six major cities in six different states so far this year, and in each one of them, I've found myself complaining about the dirtiness/pollution I've encountered. And that's even with the heightened sense of "this place is better than my place" that comes with visiting a new city. Bad behavior abounds.
Memphis is all about who you know, not what you know. That's why there are SO many unqualified people in many places they do not belong. They told us this city is majority black, where are all the black professionals? I went to school in Atl (Spelman) that was the first time I've met black business owners, lawyers (plenty), doctors, engineers. Man I loved it there!
I've seen and felt the racism that still exist here. Even if you do have a nice degree, I know a few companies that don't want to pay you the same as your white counterparts. (One reason Im relocating) When will Memphis grow up? It's so political here that many businesses refuse to establish here. (You here rumors of jobs/places coming here, but what happens?...)
I wish Memphis had more museums, restaurants, maybe some festivals to introduce the people to different cultures (African, Greek, Caribbean, a BeerFest would be nice...that Africa in April is crap)
Everything that Atlanta, Houston, and even Philly has available should definitely be in Memphis. This is the distribution center. Everything comes through Memphis!
To the person that said they want to one day lead Memphis, please, try to bring more diversity here! Im with tamican: "I don't want to live in a big garbage dump full of crime, dummies and racist zombies."

Memphis is a lot smaller than those cities. For a town this size, Memphis does have some really good features in those areas.
The other problems you highlight are pretty much exactly as you describe them, unfortunately. Other cities do have those same problems but not at the same level as Memphis.
True Memphis is smaller than the cities I listed, but I really believe Memphis is going through a long identity crisis. Is Memphis a big city? (It's the largest in TN) Is Memphis a small town? (That will explain why its all about who you know) Is Memphis a church town? (no explanation needed).
Nashville is a country town/city and they know it. I expect to see a Country music hall of fame museum, to see Trace Adkins perform at the Grand Ole Opry, and a lot more when im in Nashville.
Memphis has the potential to be a big city (empty Coliseum, why? Tore down Liberty Land, etc) it just refuses to be one.

Memphis is mid size city. It should not be comparred to philly or atl but rather nashville, austin, charlotte.
I lived in Memphis for 2 years. I loved aspects. It needs to better define its future. It would be neat if they used the KROC center development and made a K-12 magnet school that provide an Ivy Prep education for those in Shelby county with the chops.

Memphis isnt really bid per say, it has annexed a lot of its size, areas that did not want to be annexed. What makes many of thos other cities nice is the metro areas around the city. St Louis is a great example of that.
Collierville, cordova, germantown frasier, raliegh are not that great of metro areas. Just look at the malls we have here. You can tell a city area is thriving when there are a bunch of really nice malls, just something Ive noticed from traveling a lot
