apartment search help
i was offered a job in south memphis. while i was there for the interview i was looking for places close to the dental office i will be working. i was not impressed at all with s. memphis. i was advsd that downtown area or southhaven, ms would be a better choice. i was wondering if any one knows about good apts that are within reasonable price ranges downtown. or if anyone knows what's a good area that i could live that's closer to shelby ave (s. memphis area). i don't want to travel far bc i'm afraid i will get lost.
please do not refer me to websites, i already know about apt finders. thanks

South Memphis = dangerous
You may get lost the first few days you are here, but once you live here and make the trip a couple times you won't get lost driving from work to home, right? That shouldn't be a worry for you.
What is your price range? You can find an apt for any price in Memphis, so it's a crap shoot to give you suggestions unless we know what you intend to spend.

Number 10 Main is really popular. The residents love it there. All the complexes on Mud Island are good. Gayoso House is very good. There's lot of inexpensive duplexes in Midtown if you are looking to go cheaper. Uptown Square is a good value but not as fun as the other downtown complexes. There are a lot of smaller buildings downtown that have been newly renovated but won't appear online. Check the classifieds in the free weekly Memphis Flyer. They have a pdf version at memphisflyer.com.

Is the job way out east on Shelby? If so, downtown might be too far for what you want. Or is it straight south of downtown?
Under $600 is pretty low for safe areas depending how big of a place you want; downtown you could probably get a small one bedroom for that. Riverset on Mud Island might be that cheap. Uptown would probably be.
You could rent a duplex or apt in midtown for that price for sure.
SE Memphis has gone downhill greatly over the last few years. NE suburbs could have a small 1BR for that price range, but that would probably be too far away for you.
Are you only concerned with distance from work? Anything else at all that you are looking for in a home?

i am concerned with safety since i will be in memphis by myself that's why i didn't want to stay in south memphis. i am also concerned with the distance from work since i am in a new area. the job is off of shelby/millbranch rd.

Okay, so that's near downtown then. Just straight down by the airport.
I understand wanting to live somewhere safe, but you take what you get job-wise. Lots of people work down by the airport (i mean, how many people does Fed Ex employ here, billions?) and people drive in and out of bad areas for work all the time. Don't worry about that....
Look at the apts on Mud Island and also at Uptown apts. Uptown is closer to downtown, walkable. The island is not walkable and it's basically like a typical suburban style, just on the outskirts of downtown.
I think No. 10 Main would be too expensive for your price range. Maybe South Bluffs? There are the apts by the ballpark but I lived there and would never recommend them.

Does anyone have information about the watergrove apts. They are near Quince and Riverdale. I am trying to decide between them and the Hedgerow apts which are near riverdale and Shelby. I am returning to the area after a 2 year hiatus, and I am amazed at some of the changes.
