It was never my intention to compare Memphis to some other city or to impress anyone. My only goal was to start a list of things that Memphis has to offer.
I agree with you. Compare Memphis to many other cities and Memphis will probably come up lacking in quantity and probably quality of the things that are available to do. If your here or you are coming here, might as well enjoy what Memphis does offer. |

I agree with you that 'you might as well enjoy' what Memphis has to offer....that's true, but the facts are, compared to other cities its size, or even smaller (like Nashville), the city kinda suxx.....socio-culturally, educationally, entertainment-wise (certainly no plethora of great food for example).....plus the city is mired in finger-pointing along racial lines and political lines....too much Boss Crump kinda stuff.....the city refuses to really go forward......professionally I enjoyed my work there but even that was sort of 'insulated' from the true local color, thank god.....Memphis has not figured out that 'having a professional sports team', doesn't make you 'professional' or 'progressive', or even smart.....some of the dumbest people I've ever been around ..in any city in America...both black, white, polka-dot, and green....doesn't matter....and the ignorance is shamefully unaware, and they really like it that way...I can't tell you how many times some native resident suggested stuff like "well...we like ti here...and if you don't, why don't you move? "........to which I responded many times : "well why don't YOU IMPROVE? ".....to which I never received any meaningfully intelligent answer......Memphis is probably doomed to have an inferiority complex, for really no good reason at all......frankly I've never lived in a city that had so much potential......but it seems like they're too friggen scared to put one foot in front of the other and get on down the road successfully.........awful stupid stuff.....needless to say, thank god I could move.....and did so...I didn't want my family growing up in such a backward milieu...not when there are other viable, real choices to enjoy life !

Shiloh National Military Park - http://www.nps.gov/shil/
Bloody Shiloh..... “No soldier who took part in the two day’s engagement at Shiloh ever spoiled for a fight again,” recalled one Union veteran. “We wanted a square, stand-up fight [and] got all we wanted of it.” Besides preserving the site of the bloody April 1862 battle in Tennessee, the park commemorates the subsequent siege, battle, and occupation of the key railroad junction at nearby Corinth, Mississippi. |

My brother has been living in the memphis area for eighteen years, most of them in Germantown. He now lives in his own place right on the River. He's a pilot for FedEx and recently divorced and looking to meet people, especially women in the late 30's to late 40's age group. Even though he travels all over the world and never has trouble meeting people (esp. women), he is totally turned off by the night life and social life in Memphis, and can't even seem to make eye contact, let alone actually have a conversation. He's outgoing, does Yoga, Health clubs, etc., and is in good shape (no beer belly at all) but so far no luck finding good places in the area to meet new people. I've only been to Memphis a few times and I did the tourist stuff (Graceland, Beale Street), but i tend to agree with MeisterMan - for a city this size, there isn't a great variety of things to do (is there a water park in memphis ?), and not much diversity of anything. I grew up in the New york area, went to school in boston, and also lived in Tampa, and all those areas seem light years ahead of Memphis in these areas.
Anyway, what do you do in Memphis as an "older" single, looking to meet new people ?? Let's hear it !!! |

You try to avoid crime everywhere !!
We all now about the crime and the many negative aspects of Memphis. Rather than beating that dead horse, tell me where you go in Memphis to meet people, particularly "older" singles ?? |

Don't know if I can really help (or hurt)...lol...hmm women in the 30s and 40s...well let's see...first try Ruth's Chris on a Wed happy hour...also Salsa right across the parking lot....(Mexican joint...great location...awful food though)....maybe the new Fleming Steakhouse's wine bar also right across the street also on Poplar....then there's Yia'Yia's in Germantown on a Tuesday or Wed afternoon/early night ...even a bit older try the Chinese restaruant and piano bar at the Park Place Mall at the corner of Park and Ridgeway.......for happy hour try the farily upscale Grove Grill's bar area (I hat the food there but sometimes the scenery is okay).....also there used to be a jammin joint named Patrick's near Poplar and Perkins I think (realllll 'hungry' crowd of folks over 35)....then there's a place named the Cockeyed Camel which moved from Poplar over to the 6000 block of Primacy Parkway....the older place did a grest Fri night with live bands (no kids really here at all...mostly 40ish...LOL)......good luck but Memphis 'ain't got crap' !.......just for grinds don't forget happy hour at Bonefish Grill (great bar and the scenery is getting better, er, for Memphis that is).....Memphis folks, esp women, don't seem to get out like many many other cities I've lived in...again it 'ain't Dallas' either !!

Meister -
Your statement that Memphis people "don't go out like other cities" is spot on !! That's exactly what my brother is saying - glad to her it straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Arent' there any other activities besides bars to meet people ?? Book clubs, theater groups, travel clubs, etc. etc. ?? I've told my bro to give up on bars, but it sounds like there isn't anything else to do. Memphis can't be this backward, can it ?? do you know of any community activity type webistes to check out ?? There are lots of other clubs/groups that I hear about, but I don't know much about them since they are not currently something I am interested in. |
