Maybe he's right
Just for the heckof it, as an unofficial barometer of things going on in a location, I checked out craigslist for "activities" and "groups" for three similar sized cities - Memphis, Tampa, and Boston - just to compare. Boston had all kinds of things going on - chess partners wanted, pick up soccer games, travel groups, outing clubs. That's probably because most people in Boston are under 30 and single, due to all the colleges there. Tampa had a lot of the same stuff as Boston, with a little more emphasis on fishing. When I checked out the listings for Memphis, what little that was listed was almost entirely weight loss partners, or prayer groups. Almost no "fun" activities or groups. What's up with that ?? Don't people in memphis do anything fun ?? Maybe my brother is right (of course I'll never admit that to him) !

interested in checkng out your brother
I left Memphis for the past 8 years, but am back for an undetermined length of time. I am looking for running buddies with an open perspective on life and someone well traveled.
I was a flight attendant for several years, and now divorced. My lifestyle is unconventional, and I am not looking for a tied-down conventional relationship. Much of my time is spent in France and traveling, I am self-employed, late 40's, reasonably attractive, and capable of conversation.
I won't go out in the singles scene, and so meeting someone is a bit difficult. If your brother is interested, have him send me a contact email.

Even though he travels all over the world and never has trouble meeting people (esp. women), he is totally turned off by the night life and social life in Memphis, and can't even seem to make eye contact, let alone actually have a conversation. He's outgoing, does Yoga, Health clubs, etc., and is in good shape (no beer belly at all) but so far no luck finding good places in the area to meet new people. I've only been to Memphis a few times and I did the tourist stuff (Graceland, Beale Street), but i tend to agree with MeisterMan - for a city this size, there isn't a great variety of things to do (is there a water park in memphis ?), and not much diversity of anything. I grew up in the New york area, went to school in boston, and also lived in Tampa, and all those areas seem light years ahead of Memphis in these areas.
Anyway, what do you do in Memphis as an "older" single, looking to meet new people ?? Let's hear it !!!

That's right. There's nothing to do in Memphis. Store's closed. Everybody leave.

My favorite thing to do in Memphis, is to fill out out-of-state applications.

Deck,
You've been trying to find work outside of Memphis for a pretty good while now. Is the job market that bad for Police Officers in other areas? Or are you looking to get out of law enforcement?

well yes and no.
I have been mostly researching, as I don't want to jump into another cesspool like this. So I'm trying not to get into too big of rush. I actually just started sending out applications this week.
However, yeah, thanks in part to the economy, a few of the places I had an eye on are under a hiring freeze.
