Yeah, they're pretty much my favorite band ever. But I suppose they've also kind of run their course.

Aye check out Lil P-Nut, he is gonna be the next musical star out of Memphis. Only 8 or 9 years old and made appearances on Cartoon Network, Ellen and etc. One of his YouTube music videos has over 1,000,000 views

Thanks for all your opinions, many opinions with each other lol! I am looking for a town that is open to independent artists, artists that are maybe a little different from mainstream. So many music towns today are looking for a cookie cutter kind of artist and I find that I don't fit into that, so then I am left with no outlet for my music. I want to be able to play somewhere, where people like original music, that like depth to songs, that aren't just looking for the same old pop artists. Memphis seems like this kind of place. I want to play in a place where people are aware of artists, like ben harper, van morrison, johnny winter, bruce hornsby.....

As this thread is a few years old, just checking in to see if midtown is still a good option. Also, is there an area with fairly low rent artists have moved into? I know Artspace isn't ready yet, but any other similar housing options that aren't too pricey?

Midtown is always going to be the most diverse, ecclectic area of Memphis. A good mix of very expensive housing and cheap housing. I don't know about any artist-centered housing, but you could try contacting a few artist places and see if they know anything. (College of Art, Art Factory, etc.) Artspace looks to be in South Main, which is not near midtown, just FYI.

If anything, Midtown looks better to me than it did five years ago, particularly Cooper-Young and Overton Square. Of course there are still some seedy areas, and often not very far from nice areas. As an artist, you might want to take a look at Sears Crosstown, as there is supposed to be an arts component of that renovation. There should also be some cheaper apartments nearby, if not in the complex itself.
